Hi I’m in the uk and new to the forum.
Before I start I’ve already done lots of research and already know the potential problems, but I’m looking to get feedback from people who have done similar or have had some experience with the MDT TAC21 chassis,
So I’m trying to build a bergara .22rl into the TAC21
I know the side bolt release is going to be a issue as the rem 700 bolt stop is in the trigger,
So has anyone done a TAC21 with no bolt stop, modifications to work with side bolt stop or
Any other ideas???? Thanks in advance

Hey Benjo,

Looking at the end of a premier Bergara, the bolt stop looks to be about 3/4 of an inch/ 19mm to the left from the center of the bolt.

Looking at the end of the Tac21 chassis. There is no room at all for anything out side of a Remington 700 action. The trigger/bolt release has to be assembled while the action is inside the chassis.

I did notice that the bolt comes close to the buttstock section of the chassis. The bolt doesn't come out of the action enough to fall out if you try to take the bolt out with the buttstock section in place. The difference between the bolt handle and the buttstock section using the Remington bolt stop is around 1/8"/ under 3mm. Maybe stick a piece of something in the gap if the bolt comes out to far. My MDT chassis is the long action version so the gap may be different than a short action. If you do put it together I would like to know how it worked out.

Wow thanks for the detailed reply,I’ve been searching for pics similar to yours with no luck.I’ve just got some more feedback from a mdt page on Facebook apparently I could have a slot milled out for access as it’s about bang opposite the safety or remove the bolt stop and put a packing in to act as a bolt stop,I’d be interested to know how much room there is inside where the action is

I thought I’d up date this thread,I’m still waiting for my TAC21 to arrive in the uk,but I picked up my action and I’ve been lent a stock, chucked a few bits I had spare on it and it already looks great

One thing you need to check if your going to use that scope is to see if the rings are tall enough for the bell of the scope to clear the picatinny rail. If you look at the MDT website and you will see the rail stays flat across the handguard instead of contouring away like a barrel does.. I had to add a riser to get it to clear so I could mount my scope. Something to look at while your waiting for your TAC21.

I’ll be using that scope, but not those rings I’ve got the same scope on my ruger precision with Burris xtr’s, but for some reason the xtr wouldn’t fit on those rails so I borrowed those of a friend just to get me shooting, the other reason for the xtrs on the tac21 is the chassis comes with 20 moa which might be to much on .22lr so I can swap shims to get max adjustment on my scope same as I did on the rpr
The only potential problems now is can I get the bergara action to work in the TAC21 lol.
Spoke to a guy on mdt Facebook page and he’s got a clone in one that also has side bolt release so I’m confident

Just thought I’d update this thread,I finished this build today and it’s turned out great

Looks good! How did you deal with the side bolt release?
I ended up just removing it and making a bung from firm sponge that sits in the back,I may have the bolt release machined in but to be fair it works perfectly and bung isn’t noticeable
I had a few issues to get round the recoil lug on the bergara was 1mm or so too wide and the bolt handle fowled on on the chassis when sliding forwards and backwards but my mate machined them both and now it all works flawlessly and looks great
