Bergara LRP 2.0, Savage 110 Elite Precision or Tikka T3X TAC A1 for local competitions

A close friend is finally ready to come play.

He prefers a store bought option if appropriate.

These were the 3 rifles i thought of perhaps being readily available commercially for not out of his financial reality. I think anything over around 2K might be difficult...not impossible but difficult.

(I'm going to stick with what i have right now, maybe rebarrel mine to a cheaper caliber when this barrel is done)

any thoughts/recommendations? i'll copy the responses and send them to him.

Id probably lean to the tikka myself.
It takes the best parts of the savage (you can change prefit barrels yourself without first sending the action to a smith for measurments) and the best part of a bergara (not a savage or remington) and melds them into one.

This. I have a 24” CTR chambered in 6.5 CM that has been in a Bravo and now a MDT ACC. The barreled action is a hammer and the chassis just makes it that much better because of the adjustability to make it fit “just right”.

The savage is a savage, is he really ready for that?

The Bergara is going to have to go to a smith for a Barrel change.

The tikka in a chassis and next barrel with a barrel nut or available pre fits is a great option.
I’d also look into the production class offerings from bedrock, GAP and a few others I can’t remember.

It’s still prone to savage issues blue printed or not.

I’ve ran mine For quite a while.

in another thread I said I wished Tikka’s had more support when I bought my first rifle and I could have gone that route.

My savage was good to me but resale value sucks and I did eventually have the common extraction and ejection issues
It’s funny to see someone try to manhandle the bolt cause it definitely doesn’t like that and craps on your plans.
It runs fine if you feather it nicely.

curious to hear why some do not like Savage rifles....i have an old 112V that is incredibly accurate and has been very reliable and it looks like the Savage has a lot of nice features. this rifle has spoiled me to so many other rifles that i've tried of late.

that said, it sounds like people really like their Tikka rifles so i perused their website and thought perhaps the heavy varmint would be a great base model to build on. that way one could start with a nice heavy barrel rather than having to sell the stock barrel and immediately replace it with a premier barrel. For the life of me however, i can't seem to find one of the heavy varmint rifle in any of the stores i've checked.

Yea, I wouldn’t pay extra for a tuned up savage.

Clean it thoroughly, spray literally with Hornandy spray dry lube.
bit of greasy on the lugs and run it.

Some of the raceways on savages look like they were cut with a roto tiller.

True, the Bergara is not something you will want to do a barrel swap yourself but Bergara will rebarrel for $500. I personally love Bergara, I have a LRP Elite and a couple B14s. Could not be happier.

My Savage is my Franken-gun. I play around with calibers and gizmos on it before taking any drastic actions on another/new rifle. It is currently my 300 PRC. I played with it enough to know I wanted to build one. Next up (after I get my new 300) is to rechamber it in 6.5x284 (I think).

It does shoot pretty well, but I only after adding a few things (like new trigger, cheek riser, etc.)

Check out BigDaddy.com you can get a Masterpiece Arms PMR for around $1700. Shoots amazing, I was gonna go a Remington PCR or Ruger Precision route but by the time you factored in triggers and set up you are getting close to $1600 anyway. Got the MPA PMR. 130 rounds so far testing ammo and have taken it out to 1000 already. I'm going to be using it to compete in regional PRS matches in the southeast and local matches. Amazing rifle and value for the price. Mine is 6.5

Do not disregard the Howa 1500 rifles. They may be cheaper, thus allowing for more money towards ammo, optic, accessories, etc. They may also seem like lower quality or cheaper rifles due to having a lesser price, but I can assure you that's not the case. Howa rifles are really accurate and do not need truing out of the box.

If strictly sticking to the original options, I would disregard the savage and maybe lean more towards T3X but would probably end up doing a coin toss between the Bergara & Tikka.

Tikka, I've had a few savages, they all shot well, my 223 is exceptionally accurate. That being said there were always feeding hiccups if you tried to run the bolt fast. A lot of people hate the accutrigger, I treated it as 2 stage, takeup on the blade. Mine is set about 1 lb right now. I've got three Tikka's, the only thing smoother is my Impact action. Triggers are nice, a spring change gets it too light for a lot of new shooters. Buddy just bought a begara and really likes it, he also has a couple tikka's that he's swapped barrels on in the past couple months. He'd never done before I told him it was possible. Bought a vice and action wrench, some go no go's, easy peasy. Actually the first one came off easy, second needed a bit more persuasion.

Get the Tikka CTR, shoot it, then look for a chassis in the want ads if you want to upgrade.

I have a Bergara LRP which I compared to Tika's in store while shopping. If i had it to do over again I would probably buy a Tika CTR and separate Chassis. Not that I'm unhappy with the Bergara, but I think I could have had a nearly equivalent rifle for less money in the long run. I do prefer the feel of the Bergara premier action over the Tika, but not in any signifigant way. I would take either over a standard Savage (and I have one I really like) but the new actions may be enough improved to warrant serious consideration.

It may not be accurate, but the FAQ section of the Bergara website does still list the rebarreling service at $500 for a SS premier series barrel and Ceracoat.

I understand that they consider the bolts to be swappable from the B-14 to a Premier. (from a thread here) So if those tolerances are tight enough the barrel tennon and chamber dimensions may also tight enough to take shouldered prefits. If thats the case it's just a matter of time before enough smiths have the dimensions to make them available.

There's also the issue with the heavy Bergara firing pin springs. The extra tension increases the pull weight on trigger. My rifles generation does at least. I had a Timney 517 from the factory, and have a Triggertech special in it now. Have not had a chance to put the TT on a pull weight scale, but I'm estimating its about 2-2.5lb at its lightest setting. Totally usable, but not what the trigger would produce under normal condtitions.

I own 2 Savage rifles, a .223 that is a tack driver, a .308 that shoots 3/4", a Tikka CTR 6.5CM in a KRG Bravo, and a Bergara Pro in 6.5CM.
The Savages are good rifles, not as refined as the others. The Tikka and Bergara are SMOOTH, and both shoot, very well. Only taken the Bergara out once. Very impressed with the rifle, how it shoots, and the lack of recoil. The Tikka, so far is picky about ammo. Only Prime 130 shoots exceptionally well from this rifle. The Bergara likes Hornady American Gunner 140.

I flat out was not paying attention to what what I was doing post was on a Saturday night I'm in the restaurant business and I usually work 25 to 30 hours Friday and Saturday so I was probably tired had a drink or two and doing a couple things at once. I just put in big daddy I forgot the unlimited part . They have the MPA's for $1712.99 now which was cheaper than I paid. I don't recommend googling big daddy
