While I am disheartened by the news, I am not outraged.
The biggest travesty in this whole ordeal is the lives lost looking for him.
I don't believe his intent was to bring harm to his fellow soldiers.
He was a captive for several years and the court likely took that into account.
One of the biggest shams is Butt Buddy Barry seeing to it that he was promoted.

Nope, many were/are given DD's with no jail time. Most never realize how your service record follows you all your life, it can open difficult doors or slam them real quick. With a DD there is no chance in hell of doing anything for uncle or major company's the rest of your entire life.
I'm aware of the DD repercussions (23 years in the Army), but I had never heard of one with no associated prison time. You have to WORK to get a DD.
Cause and affect. The "getaway driver" had no intention of his cohorts shooting everyone in the bank. NO DIFFERENT HERE.

I think it's total bullshit. A token time in jail at a minimum. Maybe serve the remaining time on his contract from the day he walked... SOMETHING.

Back in my time, a DD was not that hard to get?
We had a guy get one in basic, an 2 get them in AIT. One draftee, got one for trying to knife a 2 star,... to me he should have got a medal but that's another story.

To make matters worse, his lawyers are appealing his Dishonorable. On the grounds that "it will hurt his future" and it "takes away his VA rights" and he needs them, because he has mental issues now.

I believe that several states have a law that takes all the profit from sales of a book about a crime from the criminal and puts the money in a victims fund. I wish something like that could be brought into play in this case.

I agree. In addition, the military has admitted they gained priceless insight into captivity, survival in those situations and how they operate with hostages. His time in captivity wasn't a vacation. He's also been completely cooperative. Those that died looking for him, truly a shame, but in the immortal words of those here in the pit, they all knew what they signed up for. Can't have it both ways, those that died looking for him died doing what they signed up to do.
To put him in prison now only further highlights the lack of mercy by a nation that loves to hide behind religious and other values but seldom stands high enough to hold 'em. Besides, why blow more money on it? It's not like putting him in prison is going to stop soldiers from defecting to ISIS --it's never been a problem. No need for deterrent. He's a one off, an outlier. As such, he should be treated as one. It was an unfortunate situation, one which we don't know the whole of --I'm betting his unit fucked with him beyond what he could handle and he said "fuck it". I've seen this first hand. We don't know.
The dishonorable discharge will follow him around, but in 6 months IIRC he can get it changed to "other than honorable" which is an honorable discharge that isn't. If that makes sense. He won't qualify for certain benefits. Don't know how it affects him with VA because that's almost guaranteed 100% disability otherwise and he may end up needing some of that. From what I understand, his mind is pretty fucked up. He looks a lot better off than he actually is, the way I understand it.
