Does anyone know what speed the berger 300gr 338 bullets like? I was pushing them at 3050 and had terrible results.
thanks for any info

Re: berger 300gr 338 bullet accuracy nodes

The bullet isn't why you are getting poor results at 3050. Your gun must not like the load you are using to get that 3050.

What are you shooting these out of to get that 3050???

Re: berger 300gr 338 bullet accuracy nodes

3050 wow!! The old design had problems with nose slump at high velocity. But that's supposed to be fixed on the second gen. Do you know which ones you have? It's prolly more likely the rifle didn't like the load.

I was shooting with him. The rifle is a 338 Rogue. It's LM with less body taper and a 37° shoulder. He chose the load based on this ladder test. I believe the loads were 111.0, 111.5 & 112.0

At 300 yards, the groups had about a 6" vertical with no consistancy (other than they were consistantly bad).

Re: berger 300gr 338 bullet accuracy nodes

If these are Gen II 300grainers the speed your sending them at isn't the problem. Guys with 408 based 338's are sending them down range well over 3200 without problems. I would say you have something in your recipe that your gun doesn't like.

Re: berger 300gr 338 bullet accuracy nodes

I talked to a berger tech today and he told me just mess with the seating depth and that should do it thanks for your info guys.

Re: berger 300gr 338 bullet accuracy nodes

Berger bullets typically like 0-10 thou off the lands and you could be trying to drive them a bit to hard for YOUR gun. Back it down a little and play with your seating depth and you may find something it likes.

How well does your gun shoot the 300 SMK???

Re: berger 300gr 338 bullet accuracy nodes

My Ex 700p in Lapua Imp shot the 300 Scenars & shoots the GenIIs really well at 3050-3100 with 1-10 barrel.

I would say you have a seating depth issue.

They also shoot really well in my Norma at 2780-2850 & Edges at 2850-2950.

Re: berger 300gr 338 bullet accuracy nodes

It shoots the matchkings really well at 2900 but I haven't tried them since I got all my brass fired formed.

Kiwi greg- what powder are you using?

Currently N570 as it gave slightly more speed than Retumbo with the Scenars.

When I use up the rest of my N570 I will change to Retumbo.

I have a 33.5" barrel which may account for some of the speed

Re: berger 300gr 338 bullet accuracy nodes

Check torque on stock/receiver bolts, scope mount torqued and secure?

I'd make twin loads for each pwd wgt charge and try again(help remove some doubt), going no higher than 109. @ 109 you wrote hard bolt lift on the target.

Re: berger 300gr 338 bullet accuracy nodes

The load with 109 must of been a bad piece of brass it was the only hard bolt lift and I am going to take out some loads and try them at different seating depths if that don't work then I will slow them down. Thanks for therefore input!!
