I am curious how far I should jump Berger VLD bullets. I am shooting a 6.5-284 Norma with 140 bergers. Distance to the lands is 3.259. Berger suggests a COAL of 3.228. I am nervous about letting the bullet touch the lands because there is so little contact with the case neck.

With one of my rifles i'm jumping .140 to the lands with 168 VLD's and thats what it likes. A couple of my other rifles like to be jammed, another one likes to be .050 off lands. Point being, all you can do is try different depths and see what it likes as each rifle is different.

Yep, although Berger states that true secant VLDs like to be jammed, they also qualify that as you do, so one just needs to experiment and see what they see.

Re: Berger VLD jump to the lands?

Last weekend I shot an OCW test with 140 VLDs in my 260. 0.010" jammed. Largest group measured 0.929" and the smallest 0.444"

Now that I have a good powder charge I am loading a seating depth test per Bergers suggestion.
0.010" jump
0.040" jump
0.080" jump

They shoot fine jammed, but we will see if they tighten up any with a little jump. I'll post the results.
