Best .308 Rifle for $2000

What are your thoughts on a .308 for the price range of $2000? Looking to shoot out to 1000 yards using a NF NXS 5.5-22X50. Hoping to put it on a different chassis system on in the future.

I'd say for an out of the box shooter get a SPR A5M. Used ones are well within your budget. Can be upgraded to a mcrees.

ETA- Keep an eye on the selling section of the forum as well. Very nice rifles are put on there for attractive prices.

I don't know how big of a hurry you are in but I would consider being patient and watching the classifieds on here, there have been some good deals lately.

Savage has a few f class rifles in 308 that will shoot like "custom" guns but costs about 1200. Down side for some is it does not look "tactical" with digital cammo and ar pistol grip and oversize muzzle brake if that is a requirement.

Check them out. They are tack drivers, look under the target menu on the left.

If you want accurate and not break the bank I'd love to hear better options than these savages. I see guys shootingat the range practicing with these that make me and my fn look like a clown. My personal opinion is steer clear of any remington. That is just my opinion.

Buy a rem 700, buy a barrel for like $350, get in on the group buy with longs rifle and have a BA rifle for right around that price. Problem solved.

The Tikka T3 is a nice rifle out of the box, Manners makes stocks for it. Accessories are limited compared to the remingtons but it shoots. If you could find a heavy barrel version, bed it in a nice stock, get cdi bottom metal with AI mags it would be within your price range. It would probably shoot with the custom barreled rems.

Get one of the FN SPR's from the Hide vendor that sells them. ~$1200. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. Has DBM, McMillan stock, adjustable trigger, and controlled round feed. Very accurate, and easy to clean with the chrome barrel.

I can sell you a Ruger American rifle for $1999.00.. This will keep you under budget by a $1. and you can shoot out to 1k. You might not be able to hit anything, but you can shoot out that far for sure.

Remington with a custom barrel will shoot well at 1000. A 5-r is a good place to start if you aren't in the mood to rebarrel right away.

Go but an action from brownells for where ever buy a nice barrel from bugholes and a scotch or chassis of your choice. You'll be good to go at budget

JUst buy an action, send it tio LRI or buy a Savage action, a Mcrees, a CBI barrel and a PST scope for right around 2k. Or get the Remmy 5r for 1200 and a PST for 2k.

The HOWA action is a very nice action with a 1 piece bolt. XLR does not show an inlet for a Howa, but they absolutely do make one.
The only thing you need to be aware of is the metric threads on the howa action. Any gun plumber worth paying for the services will be able to put your barrel on.

Very satisfied with my Rem 700P for accuracy, it can shoot sub .5 MOA at 100 yrds with Federal GMM's if I am doing my job well. I don't like the HS Precision stock though, it is a fine stock but doesn't fit me well.

I was really impressed seeing a brand new, stock Rem 700 5R be one of the most consistently accurate 308 rifles in a 3 day long range precision class with a new rifle shooter behind it (but he had shot pistols for a while). It didn't sound like he had shot a rifle in a very long time before arriving at the class and picking his rifle up from the instructor.

As some other posts have mentioned, if I had to do it again and could stand to wait, I would get the cheapest Rem 700 action rifle out there (sometimes cheaper than just the action without anything else), and get a good smith to re-barrel and blueprint. There is better out there for sure but youre going to spend double to money to really tell the difference IMO. I don't compete, just chunk lead down range and it does just fine.

I have $1670 in my A1 SPR. That's with a threaded barrel and CDI bottom metal. Add another $200 for the KMW hardware from stocdoc and you have a rig that can hold its own against anyone's custom 308s.

A lot of the guys on the reddit longrange forum are pushing the Tactical Coordination SPRs really hard.

I'm really happy with mine. It shoots Federal Gold Medal under 1 MOA with no issues.

Compared to a Remington, there's a lot of things that favor the SPR action. It comes trued from the factory. The extractor and ejector are more robust; not that it will matter for most. The trigger is adjustable to the end user, and is very simple.

I like the "features" but I will concede they are superficial, because even though I could drag this rifle through the dirt, I doubt I ever will, and most won't either. It might get abused in some matches, but that's about it.

Probably right, the tolerances on that gun are very very tight. The other option will be your Tika T3. You will see people saying a Sako TRG, this would be true if only a 308 TRG went for that cheep. The SSG is about as good.

Check out the Gunwerks site for their video on accurizing a factory rifle. They take a Remington Sendero and do a really easy lug bedding on it, and a new trigger (looked like a Timney) and we well below 1 MOA out to 1000 yds. You could also do what we did.

If you have the glass already you really have some room.

Spun on a JP muzzle brake. $100
Put a SWFA SS 10x scope on a 20 MOA rail. $300

Added a Timney 517 trigger. $150

Sure but be advised it is over max listed charge in most books. Hornady brass, winchester LRP, 44gr of varget, 178 amac at 2.8 col. No chrono data yet but I imagine its pretry hot out of my 24" barrel. That load in my gun does not show ejector marks, primer is ever so slightly starting to deform and the bolt handle lifts just fine. I FL size every time with a cheapo set of rcbs dies. Maybe one day I'll spring for a micrometer set.
