Re: Best Aftermarket Barrel
I don't know if this is that interesting to anybody at this point, but I wanted to add this information just in case anyone followed it or finds this on a search about prefit barrels.
I need to correct my earlier post that stated the price of $330 for a Brux Savage prefit. That was an old price from a Gunsmith who no longer does them at that price, but hasn't updated it.
Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply: 763-682-4296
McGowen(button) $265 http://www.mcgowenbarrel.com/index.html
Shilen(button) $269 http://www.shilen.com/
Criterion(button) $280 http://criterionbarrels.com/production.html
I talked to Jim today and he said he's moving away from the McGowen. He feels that Criterion is the best bang for your buck.
Devin Sinner at sin arms: http://www.sin-arms.com/index.html
Brux(cut) $420 http://www.bruxbarrels.com/
Rock Creek(cut) $420 http://www.rockcreekbarrels.com/
Lothar-Walther(button) $275 http://www.lothar-walther.com/339.php
Devin can make you a Brux or Rock Creek any way you want. He says that he is steering people from the Rock Creek because the wait is so long right now. I think this might be because of Rock Creeks release of their own prefit line. If I wanted a certain twist/length/contour combination in a quality cut barrel, a Brux from Devin might be the way to go.
Other prefits(factory):
Rock Creek(cut) $450
Rock Creek(button)$325
Benchmark(button) $400 (360-652-2594)
In the end I decided to get a Criterion from Jim. Part of what I'm buying is CS from JIM. Criterion just happens to make the 7mm-08 in the configuration I want it so I see no reason to get all custom about it. Rock Creek will soon have a button rifled barrel for $45 more, but I think of the Criterion as a button rifled Krieger anyway so I don't know if it's worth $45 more.
I'm going to be getting all the tools from Jim needed to swap the barrels (except for the go gage) for $112 total. Plus Jim will walk me through the process over the phone.
I will update this after I put on the Criterion, but that will be some time from now.
