The World as we know it.
Guys/Gals, I'm about to be a first time Dad in 6 weeks and at the same time looking to get a semi-308 on an AR-10, LAR-8, LR-308 platform. Basicly I want your opions on something thats probably going to come straight from the factory for around 1500 bucks b/c well kid are expensive right. Right now in my mind its the LAR-8 from Rock River Arms. Most likely the 26" varmint and have it cut down to 22". I have ran DPMS, and Armalites in the past but would like to know what else there might be out there or I might need to know. Yeah I get it why not save another 1500 and then get a GAP10 well that won't happen. So factory rifles it is. Thanks for your time.

Dang! New Child and still can afford a gun! Congrats on both Bro!

Rock River Makes some good AR products.

Now I understand you're budget is at $1,500 but it seems like this might the only purchase that you'd be making for a while. If you keep your eyes peeled in the For Sell Section you might be ableo to find a LWRC or LMT slight higher than your price range, but you'll be getting a rifle set for a Long Time!

Also, look into CMMG as well, they have some fair stuff too.

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

yeah Kinda need one that will hit what I aim at and keep doing it for a long time. And as for some cash I kinda have some play money hid away....yeah I should save it for troubles but if I do that then it will be 20 years before I get a new gun, Ha. I will keep a look out for sure. And there are plenty of bolt guns out there but I love the AR platforms....

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

I love my rock river tactical operator 2. Shoots about 1" @ 100yards with my nikon m-223 3-12 niko scope with the 20moa 1pc nikon mount... sometimes 3/4" @ 100yards once in a blue moon... anything more and that is pushing it. Never had a problem with feeding / ejecting. Kinda wish I got something a little more 20" stainless steel barrel, but I got it for under $1k brand new and had a free float handguard and very nice trigger and nice stock. this is in .223 mind you.

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

I would also look at the dpms .308 recon... IMO, one of the most bang for your buck rifles in .308 cal for under $1400 bucks. I almost got one of these before I went hog wild on my LMT, but it was soooooo worth the extra money too............ usually pick up a .308 recon for around 1299 to 1399.... would not go over 1399... cabela's usually has them even in stock around 1399.99

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

If you're not dead set on an AR platform, consider the FNAR. Yeah, I know it is really a Browning BAR, but it is a short gas piston action with a 1 MOA factory guarantee. They currently run right at $1000 so you have enough cash to put towards a scope and mount. The cons are: 1) no fixed sights and 2) magazines are very expensive (~$60). Some say it is ugly, but nothing that shoots 1 MOA is ugly in my book.

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

I can't speak to them personally, but I know Fulton Armory is having a labor day sale including 5% off rifles. Can get into one of the sub-1.25 MOA .308 rifles for under $1700.

Otherwise if you are willing to build something, you should have a number of other options that will be sub $1500 (like something using a Rainier select .308 barrel, a Fulton barrel, ar15performance, etc).

Tactical Machining makes a nice affordable lower you could build up.

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

build it and get it the way that you want it and you will still have 1500-1700 in it, how do i know? that was a bargain build with good parts and it was over the planned $1K, but worth it

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

I built my DPMS LR-308 Lower About 8 Years ago (No Joke), and just now recently got a 16 Scout Upper for it on Midway. Partially because it was a serious Pain to just find a DPMS Upper these days...NOBODY had them! At the time Midway USA had the Best Price around in a LONG Time! I think I spent total of $350 on the Lower and the upper was $550 from Midway. The whole gun cost me less than $1K. But it's a 16inch that I plan to build into a OBR type rig.

I also recently score a Dam Near Brand New (20 rds fired) Armalite AR10 20" Chrome Lined Heavy Barrel with 2 x 25rd Mag for $899 and a local gunshop. Probably my best purchase of the year!

I'd say just be patience and look around. You might find one that just Jumps out at you!

Good Luck Bro!

Cheers.

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

Alot of guys here on the hide have been posting threads about the Bushmaster ORC. They can be had for about a grand give or take. I would change the grip and stock and throw a Troy tube on it and call it a day. Take a look at one, I had the chance to fondle one at a LGS and itseemed decent.

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

I'm quite pleased with my LR 308. Picked it up at Gander Mountain of all places for $999.99.
It's only a 16" barrel, but has free float tube, and is keeping three Nosler 155's well inside an inch at 100 yards.

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

I have to say my only experience with ar platform 308's is the DPMS lr-308 I bought a few years ago,but I can say that I'm completely satisfied with this rifle. It has a 24" stainless steel,1-10 twist barrel with a brake.I have done nothing to this gun besides break the barrel in with the Tubb bore conditioning bullets and it shoots extremely well.I mostly shoot Hornady 168 BTHP's,and it'll shoot well under an inch at 100 yards.I don't have anywhere to do any long range accuracy testing, but I've shot pop-ups at 460 yards and it'll knock them down everytime if I do my part.By the way,I've got under $1600.00 in the whole rig(gun, scope, and bipod).I have some 178 gr a-max's to try soon,as I think these will probably shoot better due to the fast twist of this barrel.

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

Armalite shoots well, excellent parts source, lifetime warranty. I've got the chrome lined double lapped and couldn't be happier cause I want to quickly hit 18x24 and longevity. The match barrels will do what you want.

I'm a big fan of the genII mags for the ar10 also. Check magazine compatibility with the others before you commit.

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

I have had 4 AR10's, all performed and got them under 1500.00. had to wait for sale. problem is when you go for the add ons, it will push you over unless you find a used one. Good luck in your search.
Oh Yeah congrats on your new addition. best regards.

Re: Best AR10/semi-308 rifle for under $1500?

I own the Rock Rover A4 varmint in .223 topped with a Mark 4. 3.5-10 and it will shoot 1" or a little under with cheap 55 gr FMJ UMC ammo from walmart. Goes down to 1/2 moa with match ammo. I've only got a chance to shot it at 100 yards and its not the 308 but don't see why it wouldn't be a good shooter too.
