Range Report best BC on a 260 bullet

Re: best BC on a 260 bullet

I'm confused. You just want the best bullet in 6.5mm based solely on BC?

If that's the case I'm pretty sure you should look at the 140 JLK

If you want the flattest shooting 6.5mm round I think it's along the lines of the 6.5 WSM with a 140 JLK or the 264 Allen Mag (essentially a 6.5 WSM with some improvements) and a 140 running around 3700 fps.

It torches barrels like a cheap hooker goes through cigarettes.

Re: best BC on a 260 bullet

Find a good bullet with a good BC, and see which shoots the best in your rifle. That will be your best option. Any of the 139, 140 or 142 will do well.
If you want to spend some money to get a high BC, get the 140 VLD's and buy a meplat pointing die. This will increase your BC by about 4%. I'm playing with it now. Initial testing is getting me right at 1 MOA less drop at 600 yards.

I'm confused too!

Is the 6.5wsm a new factory round? Did I miss something?? Or are you talking 'bout a wildcat 7mmWSM or .300WSM necked down to 6.5?

My F-class buddy has gone 7mmSAUM, but is necking down .300SAUM and lengthening the case as it is fireformed. (It's a brass issue!)

I thought that the idea of a 6.5SAUM offered a better balanced case (Not as stupidly over-bore) than a WSM case adapted.

Thought's, comments, queries?

Boltripper is a top bloke, listen to what he says. He is mellowing in his old age. He wasn't NEAR so kind when I first posted!

Try these, they may help.

It's a wildcat. I'd make it from 270 WSM brass since it's the closest bullet size, easiest to neck size, and it has a longer neck than the 7 WSM so the barrel life will improve, even if ever so slightly.

The 6.5-7SAUM sounds like a pretty solid performer too. I have a 7 SAUM on the way right now.

The 7mm bullets have better BCs than the 6.5's do, just FYI. The extra recoil, powder, and slight increase in expense might stop you from it. The barrel lives are significantly better though.

Re: best BC on a 260 bullet

I've used 139 Scenars, 140 A-Max, and 142SMKs. They all have personalities, and BC is only a part of the true story. As loads go, I've found that the A-Max and SMK work with essentially the same loads. For some reason, the 139 Scenars generated somewhat more pressures for the same loads as the others; and I decided they were maybe more trouble than they were worth, and they were not as easy to acquire in my area. I settled on the 142's as the best bullet for my particular purposes, which were mostly 1000yd F Class work and the like.

Re: best BC on a 260 bullet

Greg,
Have you measured your 139 Scenar diameter? Mine are 1/2T larger than Bergers and A-Maxs. - hence more pressure. My Scenar loads shoot very well but with 0.5gr less powder (4350) for the same velocity.

Re: best BC on a 260 bullet

Have none left to measure. Not buying any more in the forseeable... I had attributed the pressure issue to bearing length, jacket thickness and hardness, but who knows...?

The second column in pd721el's Berger data is not sectional density; rather, it is the G7 ballistic coeffient (BC). The first column is the G1 BC.

Boltripper, any info you can pass on regarding this bullet would be greatly appreciated.

Re: best BC on a 260 bullet

I would like to know what speed those 144 Lapua were running to get that.636 BC . I've shot about 11,000 rounds at 2775 and the BC was .555 with 2 different barrels.

Given this pill has such a high BC and is available to you guys States side why do you not shoot this rather than the 139 scener or 140 amax. I have sent an email to Swampworks as I want to try some out =I would also like to try out the 144 gr fmj hpbt scener although according to Bryan Litz its MEASURED BC isnt as shown -also I think it was either Lindy or Greg Langlius mentioned it showed more pressure in their rifle than the Scener or Amax -I know boltripper uses both {do you use the same load for both }? and does one show much better performance than the other --this would be good to have some feed back on .ta
