I'm in the process of ordering a dewey rod to clean my 338 lapua, I noticed 2 different style jags where one has a poker in the center and the other is meant to wrap the patch around it, parker hale style. What do you guys recommend? Should I get a bore guide also? if so which one?

Re: best cleaning jags?

Shit, I hope I havent messed up my barrel. I always very slowly pull my brush back through the bbl. Wont be doing that anymore!!
Do the Parker hale style jags really work that much better?? Ive used the poker type with round patches for years. If using a parker hale jag, do you have to use square patches or do round ones work?? And gosh, my Dewey patches usually sing going down the bbl. Ive switched to brownells patches and this doesnt happen anymore. I always thought it was the carbon fiber rod singing. (I use tipton rods, dewey jags and brushes and now brownells patches. Just as good as dewey and half the price)
OP, thanks for creating this topic. Some good info you and me both are getting here.

Re: best cleaning jags?

+1 for the parker hale jag

I only push the patch half way out at the muzzle so the patch stays tightly wound around the jag when pulling it back through.

Re: best cleaning jags?

I use both type jags and it is just which 1 makes it out the box and onto the rod. For me they both work. I would suggest that your bore guide have a solvent port. I like the fact of putting my solvent on the patch in the port as it makes for less mess with a soaked patch. I have some rods that i got off Neal years ago and the jag is made into the rod when made. No screwing it on. Love them and would never part with those cleaning rods.

I don't recommend it! A few times you probably didn't hurt it.

Yes the brush is softer than the steel but the old saying I go with is "why can water erode rocks" you do it enough your going to cause damage.

If you insist on using a brush go breech to muzzle and all the way out. Remove the brush before pulling the cleaning rod back thru the bore.

Even the powder gases will have a gas cutting effect and can wear the crown.

We see more damage from cleaning than from shooting and the thing that takes the beating more than anything else is the muzzles crown.

Re: best cleaning jags?

Best cleaning jag is a worn brass brush wrapped with cloth patch.

Use this way with cleaning sollution on patch to remove carbon and copper. Then use dry patches to dry bore.

When all done spray brush with WD40 so cleaners dont eat brush

Insist on using a brush? I thought I had to use a brush to scrub the copper fouling out? I use buchs bore shine for cleaning. I run two wet patches then let it sit 5 min then 8 passes with brush then 3 wet patches then 4 dry. Is the brushing needed? Or will patches and solution do the trick?? DAMNIT!! Im starting to panic now!!

LoL I use a jag for the patches. I dont wrap them around a brush. I can always see copper when I look at the muzzle end at about a 45 deg. angle. Thats why I use the brush. Is it normal to always see a bit of copper?? By the way, I see you work at Bartlein. Just wanted to say keep up the good work!! Im runnin one of your 5R bbls. on my 300WM. The thing shoots great. Thanks for makin a great bbl. And thanks for the advice. I owe the OP for this thread. I dont want to ruin my bbl. and I guess I was. Luckily the gun has only about 125 rds through it but I cleaned it a bunch during break in using the procedure stated above.
