I've been shooting well with Hornady TAP AMAX 168g and FGM 168g SMK's, are there any other factory or small production ammo to look at? I am not currently reloading and was curious…..

20" .308 1/12 twist, 600yds and in

I have had good luck with FGMM .308 175's, I think my SD was around (bit under) 10. I have been running Southwest Ammo, and their numbers are a bit higher. I think they have a good reloading program so I am willing to live with it for now. I haven't shot the Black Hills, but I just got some Lapua I am going to test out as well.

Since you have a .308, take a look a Lapua's factory match offerings...loaded ammo in 50 round boxes. Your choice of:
155 Scenar, 167 Scenar, 175 Scenar L, and 185 Scenar. I've shot these in many .308's and overall performance is as good as it gets. Another plus is the Lapua brass you will have left over for when you begin handloading.

I was curious about the SW ammo reloading program myself…

good point on the brass for sure! and worst case is I can sell them off if I never reload…

re Lapua - you need to sell off the brass - or use it as a excuse for the price the Lapua ammo costs :). I think its double the cost of the FGMM IIRC. I think 50 rounds is around $100 or so - a bit less maybe. While I can get FGMM for around $20 a box. I forget what I paid for the Lapua cases for .308 - but I don't think they were $1 per case...

if you look for specials that Southwest runs - you can get their .308 ammo for around the same price (at least close) to what FGMM runs. Then you left with good reloadable brass after (if you roll your own) - else you can have them reload it for you for less than new...

I think if they get their number more in line with FGMM in terms of ES and SD then it will be a winning combo.

around $20 a box??? that's pretty awesome, but would make it way more awesome is if you pm'd me where, pretty please

are there any reviews/reports on their ES&SD? or reviews in general? I found a few threads here, but they mostly lean towards the HUGE delivery times and lack of comms... 6 months for reloads i read also.... Probably a very small outfit and overwhelmed, everyone spoke very highly of the quality.

Palmeto State Armory IIRC often has FGMM for very low prices - less than my distributor. My last order was $24.99 / box of 20, but it varies in price. Currently they are out. My last box of Southwest Ammo was Southwest 308 Match 155 Scenar for $26.99 a box. My last Lapua (with a discount) was LAPUA AMMO 308 155 GR HPBT SCENAR (50) for $83.99.

So on a per round price:
FGMM= $1.24
SW = $1.34
Lapua = $1.67

Both SW and Lapua have good brass for reloading - some people like the FGMM I guess - but I hear its pretty soft for reloading - so I haven't tried it. The retail price on the Lapua is higher by the way as well... (91.30). The cost for Lapua brass in .308 is $.71/case - not sure what it would equate for SW.

I think the messages about Southwest Ammo you were reading were due to group buys where lots of people ordered and they had long delays filling the demand. I just order what is in stock and haven't had to wait more and a few days to get mine delivered. I haven't yet used their reloading service. I am guessing they use Starline brass - but I dont' know for sure - its headstampped for them by whoever manufactures it.

So far, I have had good luck dealing with them - they reply to emails withing a reasonable time - and I can get them on the phone about 2/3's of the time I call in.

Thank you for your feedback and info! I emailed them earlier today and am waiting to hear back, if they are busy that's good!!! I was able to get a case of FGMM for 1.369 a round shipped which at that time was the least anywhere online that I could find. I will keep my eyes open on PSA

You started the thread for best factory ammo in terms of quality and consistency and now it becomes another "best for cheapest" discussion. I have shot everything listed on this thread and I would go with lapua 167's but that is just my opinion. I either purchase fully loaded lapua and then reload them as needed or purchase lapua components and reload for my .308's and even though they are not the cheapest, lapua brass will last a long time. Additionally, start reloading.....

If you want "the most for your dollar", then it becomes critical to define what your minimum acceptable performance actually is. Are you looking for accuracy/precision? If so, how accurate/precise and at what range? Are you looking for higher BC or possibly increased MV? A specific hunting load? When you're talking factory loads, there is literally no "magic bullet". You try several different loads (sometimes many) and find out what your rifle likes or doesn't like, using whatever criteria are most important for the type shooting you intend to do. Then you shop around to find the best possible price you can for one or more of the loads that showed acceptable performance.

With your 12 twist barrel, pretty much any typical factory load up to 175 gr will potentially work. FGMM, Black Hills, CorBon, and Lapua are possible manufacturers to look at. Hornady also makes a couple different loads that might shoot well from your rifle. However (and this is a BIG however), your rifle is going to let you know which brands work and which ones don't. Without more specific info about your rifle, no one here can tell you one way or another which one(s) might perform well. The best you can do is make an educated guess based on how they shot in other peoples rifles, which may or may not be true for you. I've shot many, many rounds of every brand of ammo listed here and I can tell you, regardless of their "general" reputation, some shot well in certain rifles, and in others they did not. The good news is that with any luck at all, you should be able to find one or two that shoot reasonably well in your rifle and can also be found at a reasonable price. You might get better feedback if you told us exactly what your rifle/setup is, in case anyone here has already identified a load that works well in the same setup.

FWIW, if you decide to chrono factory loads to get MV data, I can tell you that you will be extraordinarily lucky to find one that gives you less than 30-50 fps extreme spread, in some cases even higher, and SD numbers in the teens and up. I have chrono'd literally hundreds of each the brands listed and have found this to be the case with a variety of different rifles. The best I have ever found is the Applied Ballistics 175 Tactical load, which for me runs in the neighborhood of 15-20 fps ES and around 10 SD. On paper, the ASYM 175 SMK load should be similar, although I'm currently waiting on some to see how it compares to the AB175s. Neither of these loads is cheap, coming in in the $35.00-$40.00 per box range. Bottom line is that if you want single digit ES/SD numbers for LR shooting, you're going to have to reload your own. Having said that, I've done very well shooting the AB 175s in competitions out to 1000 yd, but it can get pretty expensive if you shoot a lot.

IMO, the best thing you could do would be to try a few different loads, including some that are reasonably priced, and maybe one or two high end match loads like the Applied Ballistics or ASYM. That way, you can have something that performs reasonably and is reasonably priced so you can shoot it a lot, but also have a small amount of the really good stuff for very special occasions.

thank you gstaylorg, I just need to get out and shoot a bunch of different brands and see what the rifle likes.....

though it's clear that reloading is something I need to work towards big time, the cost savings and consistency far outweigh the inconvenience.

I wouldn't go too far overboard with it. Try a few and see how they shoot. A box or two of each should be enough to let you know. Once you know what you want, start watching ammunition suppliers to look for sales. One place to try is GunBot 22lr rimfire ammo, which is a search engine for in-stock ammo. I've had pretty good luck finding FGMM175s on sale from time to time at Palmetto State Armory, which someone also mentioned above. The main thing is to avoid places that list ammo as "In Stock", then you wait 3-4 months or more before it comes. Unfortunately, it's hard to predict whether that will happen. Hope you find some that shoot well for you.

Show me 20$ 175 smk federal ammo and I'll show you a magical unicorn. 34.99$ per 20 at midway plus shipping so about 42$ for 20...... Maybe there's a reason for lapua ammo coming in boxes of 50. 42 +42+21= OMG! The same $ as a 50 round box of .308 lapua scenars

try them all, your rifle will tell you by the groups. i have one custom that puts FGM 168 and 175 on top of each other while another loves the hornady. and funny enough both hate lapua, i think it is the chamber/bullet shape combo. both fire all match factory i have found under 1" easily but there is a difference. one thing to remember is that the federal brass is a little softer and the primer pockets open up after 2-3 reloadings. not a big deal if you don't reload as of yet, but if you are like the rest of us you will save the brass for "one day".
