Re: Best long range scope

I can't believe that the guy that started this thread has a Savage 338LM and can't figure out what scope to mount on it for a moose hunting trip. Is this clown for real? Surely there must be a forum some place on "hunting moose" that you could have posed your question on. What's worse is the multitude of jack wagons that chime in with crap info and bogus assertions.
Viper007, you suffer from cranial rectal inversion if you can't figure out that you are going to need a robust optic for a .338LM! Of the 5000 or so threads on just optics alone, any logical person would be able to ascertain who makes a quality optic. If you can't figure that out for yourself you probably have no business getting behind a rifle, little lone a pop-gun. Which leads me to the next section of this rant. What in the fuck are hunting moose with a .338LM for? A well placed shot from any of the standard "typical" rifle cartridges is more than sufficient for dropping a moose. Hell, I lived in Alaska for 4 years and carried a 300 RUM, but that was only because the area I hunted in was notorious for bears. Now if bears are a concern for you I have to ask the following: What are you going to do with a .338LM and 5-25 power scope, when a Kodiak comes plowing out of the bushes 15 yards from you? You don't need a scope in that situation, you need iron sights and steel nerves. I also have to ask: What distance are you planing on shooting at? As another person pointed out in this thread, it's unethical to take a shot an an animal unless you know your going to hit it and kill it with one shot! You might consider getting that high powered scope for your high powered rifle, but instead of going hunting this fall consider getting some high powered rifle training. In doing so you will solve two of your problems right off the batt. 1. You will learn what works and doesn't for rifles, calibers, and optics, and 2. You will find out that there really was no need to post this stupid fucking question in the first place. Now please do the rest of us a favor and read more and post less.
Thanks!
Rant off....
I'm pretty sure this one will win me a ticket to the dog house by our esteemed moderators. Please forgive me, but I just had to do a little vigilante style moderating on my own. By the way Viper007, don't take it all personally, you just asked a really dumb question and I had to call you out on it. </div></div>
Good post tman.
Viper, what scope do you have on your Savage 110 now? Chances are it will work. As you know, the 110 does not have that much recoil and any half way decent scope will work. If it works on a .308 it will work on the .338 LM. However, the 110 is more of a long range tactical rifle and a bit heavy for toting around the woods hunting moose. You should be more specific as to what your budget it is and what other uses you have for the scope/rifle combination. I doubt if the gun is dedicated to only hunting moose. Be more specific, etc.
