Best Magnum Primers

Re: Best Magnum Primers

In Stock! No Crap! The whole reloading world has been turned on it's head by our King. I already use Federal for my normal primers and match ammo, but have not tried them in Magnum because I happened to find a bunch of Win on sale, probably because they had been on the shelf for 10 years by the look of the faded box.

Would like to buy some new ones when they are finally available and would like to put the "best" in my very expensive to shoot magnum rifles.

I'm getting tired of the OUT OF STOCK, NO BACK ORDER on brass and bullets. Hope the madness ends soon.

"....is there a short list of agreed upon best Magnum Primers for 300 Win Mag, 338 Lapua Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 WSM?"

No.

There are only 4-5 magnum primer brands out there, so take your pick.

I've used Federal 215s, 215Ms, CCI 250s and Winchester LRM primers in the past. I have a carton of Remington 9 1/2s and CCI #34s, but haven't tried them yet.

Right now, I'm using 215Ms in my 7RM and 338LM, mostly because I have them and they work well for me.

Can't speak for the Ruskie brands.

Even with my limited experience and in my Garand I can tell the difference. The chronograph does not lie. It can tell even better than I that primers are not all the same.

Bolt action rifles, it is even more obvious. When an impact takes nearly 1 second the shooter has so much time to see the trace and reflect on how the shot "felt" that a primer or powder charge that was not right can be "called" before impact.

Unfortunately I had none of those today. Primers, powder charge, bullets, brass and rifle were all as good as I could make. The "misses" of a 6" steel flapper at 700 yards, were all the shooter, as in me. 10 of 20 shots on target is poor when I've done 12 in a row.

From a precision standpoint, I stick with Federal Gold Medal Match 215M.

The CCI primers have a thicker/harder cup than Feds. At least in LR they do. Not sure if its true between SR and MAG primers tho.

Ive got a sleeve of the 250 mags for my 338 when its ready

And for that, all I can say is "Thank you."

When looking for the "best" primer understand the the coolest that will consistantly ignite/burn the powder charger usually produces the best accuracy. That means what's best will likely change for the same rifle and cases as the power type and charge changes so experimentation is required before making the "best" choice.
