I have tried a few measures and even the accutek micrometer measures for the dillon.
whats is the best accuracy for reloading with the dillon 550 and still having an efficient method.
Currently I have removed the powder measure and adapted a funnel to weigh each load on a acculab 123 within .1 grains then dump it in when the press is at the top of the stroke .
    accurate but slow as hell
    thanks Bill

You have accuracy on your dillon as is.
You could go back to the dillon dispenser and trade accuracy for efficiency, but I'm not sure whether you can have both on that machine without lowering your standards somewhat.
Adding a redding or rcbs measure and manually operating might give an acceptable middle ground.

I'd say RL15 based on the Corbon factory ammo for the snipers hide cup last year.

I've been shooting the 2 cases I have on hand. I was getting great accuracy to 500 yards. Even though over the P35 I have says, ES and SD of 50+ at times. I decided to pull every 5th round (4 per box of 20 ) and pull the bullet and measured the charges. Some varied by .5+ grs

I load ALL my rifle and pistol ammo on 550's. You have to consider what your asking the powder drop to do. Long extruded powders ie: Varget, don't work, at least for me. Reloader 15 works great, drops within .1 grain. 2520, BLC-2, N-133 all meter very well. Ball or short extruded work the best.

Polishing the powder funnel helps a lot, give the powder a chance to drop into the case. A solid bench and mount for reloader is a must. Each cycle of the reloader should be the same. If the brass is already sized (I do it during the trim operation) it cycles the same each time.

the only Dillon machines that i have personally witnessed that were cranking out custom ammo consistently and repetitively and accurately had a Prometheus attached to it...that is mounted on the top of the Dillon or suspended from the ceiling......

Wow... what Dillon model do you have?

I've often thought of purchasing one as the system I have now I'm growing impatient with.

I polished my Dillon drop and got very good consistency with N550 and H322. Varget, H4895 and RL-17 were still +/- 0.2 gr.

Hornady powder drops are +/- .1 As it currently stands my hornday drops red dot very well. I frequently test powder drops for pistol. I want 5.2 grains of Red Dot to drop consistenly. It drops 5.2 or 5.1 grains all the time. Mostly 5.2 is the weighed drop

I believe dillon actually has an adaptor that allows you to use a different powder throw.

Re: best powder accuracy out of dillon for rifle?

I load on a Dillon RL550B and use the RCBS charge master to weigh charges for my "match grade" ammo.

For volume loading (like pistol or bulk / blasting ammo) I have no worries using the respective powder bars in my Dillon dispenser. For pistol it is money. For larger cases (like 30-06 or larger)the magnum bar is better suited. I've loaded a bunch of .223 from the Dillon powder dispenser and have been very pleased with the consistency of throws of H322, BLC2, W748 and other ball powders. For extruded you have to accept less precise throws, though polishing of the funnel and precise repetition of lever strokes can improve consistency to .1 grain of Varget or RL-15.

The main thing is you can't know for sure unless you weigh each charge rather than select samples.

I have polished the three Dillons that OI have , can't hurt.
I will let you know next week what the results are .
I would like to get withing .1 but will go to within .2 and try this polished method .
    The do polish up quickly

Re: best powder accuracy out of dillon for rifle?

I have my 550B set up to drop the charge just a tenth or two heavier than the desired load. I pull the case, weigh the charge, do a pinch and trickle back until the weight is bingo. Then I recharge the case with a drop tube and reinsert it into the press.

That's for the supahdupah match ammo.

For lesser stuff, I use ball powder and just run the danged thing progressive, with an eye on the powder levels in the case necks. They seem to be surprisingly even.

I just did a test run of progressively loaded .223 with CCI standard primers.

I'll be watching that batch for flyers. I suspect that if the basic load is good, I won't have all that many problems with them...; and if I'm wrong, I can pull the bullets on the remaining loads.
