Best Rifle for $600 ?

Re: Best Rifle for $600 ?

Very cool Merrit, I am sure I will take you up on that. First thought I was going with a Stevens model but decide to go with a Savage. Leaning towards 11FXP3 or the 10 GXP3....

Re: Best Rifle for $600 ?

Scouts are for fast shots in tight areas. The scopes are low magnification and are for a spotter or a secondary shooter. They are not for range shooting. The two hunting models you have picked will be good shooters but the only advantage they have over the stevens is the accu-trigger other than that they are the same rifle.

Good luck,

Re: Best Rifle for $600 ?

The accu-trigger can not be purchased separately. It takes mods to the receiver. You can however get a competition trigger that will have the same pull as an accu-trigger for $89.00 so if the price is low enough on the accu-triggers I guess it's worth it.

I would stay away from the wood stocks. The reason our military doesn't use them is because of expansion and contraction due to temperature and moisture conditions your rifle may shoot different depending on if your stock is swelling or not. Unless you're getting serious about long range shooting I guess it doesn't matter but if you want to get into competitions it will make a difference.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: Best Rifle for $600 ?

I have a question mwroseberry.

Are there synthetic stocks out there that absorb recoil as good as a nice hard wood stock such as a laminate? All my rifles are wood stocks and the only synthetic stock I shot killed my shoulder after just a couple shots.

Re: Best Rifle for $600 ?

Tenyears, thats odd you think the syn stocks hit harder. I had a ruger m77 in 300wm with wood and it hit like a horse, now i am shooting a rem m700p in 300 Ultra and it hits but it does not kill my shoulder, in fact it is nothing to sit at the range and send 50 rounds out of it (not in succession of course). granted there is a substanial weight difference in the two but also I am shooting 40 gr heavier bullets at the same velocities. Also I have a hogue stock on my FN (waiting for my A4 for JW) but i can shoot that all day long.

My B&C that I have now kicks just slightly more than my M16A4 service rifle I had in the Marines. I can shoot my 308 all day and be perfectly fine. Any good quality aftermarket fiberglass stock will absorbe recoil better than a wood stock.

Good luck,

Re: Best Rifle for $600 ?

Savage or SPS remington you can not go wrong. But, if you are going to upgrade and like to do things on your own go with Savage. It is very easy to change the barrel out your self and set the headspace in about 16 or 20 minutes.

Re: Best Rifle for $600 ?

The Savage and the Rem 700 would be better choices than the 770, mainly because they lend themselves more easily to upgrading.

The 770 was designed and built as a hunter's generic implement, intended to be available at a minimal price point. For its purpose, I think it does a very good job. But if you're not hunting mid-larger game, then it's not your gun.

The .308 combines a lot of good factors, and does it well enough out to reasonably long distances without the added cost and recoil asssociated with shooting the .300WM.

If my requirements exceeded 1000yd by a really big distance, or required decisive knockdown power at extreme distances, the .300WM would be my pick. With all due respect to the 'further, harder' crowd, I have yet to genuinely find such a need.
