Best rifle length free float handguards for $200

Re: Best rifle length free float handguards for $200

I really like my VTAC FF tube. I can add things as I need them without an uncomfortable rail system.

MI SS Gen 2, lightest, slimmest, user configurable hanguard. Also inc barrel nut and wrench, affordable, availible in colors. Mine's a 15" if its going over the gas block it better be a small one.

My favorite? JP VTAC. The Troy VTAC looks good too, and is probably more straightforward to install (no red Loctite necessary). I used to be a big fan of the DD light, but like many others, have found out you don't really need a Picatinny rail farm on your handguard, just a piece of rail here and there will do.

What the rifle going to be used for? If you are going to be shooting off of bags or aren't going to be needing rails, you can check out the Model 1 freefloat tube for about $40 or the Bushmaster V-Match freefloat tube for about $100.

Lethal

I think I am building a very similar grendel. when mine gets done i will post some pics up here. I dont think i am going to spend the money on a NF scope though. I cant justify it when it will probably never shoot farther than 800yds. Not to mention it is just another play toy.

Re: Best rifle length free float handguards for $200

Depends on the length of you gas system, and if you have a FSP or low-profile gas block. Are you using a bipod?

I like the DD lite rails and also have a Troy extreme, but dont like it as much...

Nice. How do you like the side charger? Mine is on order! I hope it will be here the week after next.

I almost bought the same one but I really like the barrel nut on the JP. Mine is also a 15".

Re: Best rifle length free float handguards for $200

I forgot to mention, the rails are sold separately, and are pretty expensive, but you only need to buy those you require. The full length top rail matches perfect with the upper receiver, or you can get a short top rail if you prefer (for your front sight).

Installation is easy, it uses a unique, two piece "clamp" around your standard barrel nut, then the handguard slides over top of the clamp and attaches with 4 screws. That's it.

Re: Best rifle length free float handguards for $200

Planebuilder, that handguard looks real nice. Is it pretty solid when you tighten it down?
What plane are you building?

Re: Best rifle length free float handguards for $200

The handguard is as solid as any I've handled. The fit of the handguard over the clamp is really tight, and the interface (overlap if you will) is about an inch, so plenty of area to transfer the load from the handguard into the clamp/barrel nut.

The feel of the "gator grip" (Apex's name for the texture on the handguard) is great, not overly agressive, but positive.

As far as what plane I'm building, I've worked on quite a few. I started on F-22A, then F-35, Bell ARH-70, F-16, Bell V-22, UH-1W and UH-1Z, MH-60M, and most recently P-3C.... I dont actually build them, I design them (or parts for them)... in hind sight, I should have made my name "planedesigner"....

Re: Best rifle length free float handguards for $200

I have the Troy TRX and the Samson Evo and like them both. The Troy has a smaller diameter than the Samson but the Samson is by far the lightest forend around (other than the carbon fiber stuff) I sell a ton of the Samson's and everyone loves them.
