I just ordered (but haven't received) a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50mm FFP scope and I'll be mounting it to a Remington 700 SS 5R in .308 Win.

What rings and bases to you guys recommend? I've looked at the Leupold Mark 4 single piece base and rings set up and I like that a lot but want to know what you guys recommend.
Does anyone have an identical set up that could easily tell me what ring height to go with? If not, no worries, I will figure it out.

Thanks for your advise.

Re: Best rings and bases?

Seekins rings and bases for me.
There are lots of quality rings available, but I started with Seekins and I've never seen a reason to change.

Re: Best rings and bases?

I agree that EGW make a great product - I've got a couple, one sits on a .338LM and has given no problems what so ever. They are very well made and I'd be hard pushed to find any fault. Seekin's do seem to be the gold standard however.

Re: Best rings and bases?

The only thing I have to compare them to is Leupold, but I just got a Badger base and Rings, and these things are impressive. I aslo hear nothing but good things about Seekins' products as well, but I have no first hand experience. I quess it comes down to how much you want to spend, but it appears as though you can't go wrong with any of the above listed brands.

They have a number of options for you; steel, aluminum, HD, 0 MOA, 20 MOA, 30 MOA... What distances do you think you will be shooting?

I will primarily be shooting < 500/yards but I will also occasionally shoot 1000/yards.

Whichever brand you decide to go with get yourself a 20MOA rail. That way you'll be able to take advantage of all of the scopes internal elevation for when you want to go out long range.

Both of those are great reccomendations. Another wold be TPS in my opinion.

Re: Best rings and bases?

I have been using Glen Seekin's rings and bases and the quality is excellent, I also have some Badger rings and again the quality is excellent. On my FT/R gun, I have Cameron Murphy's rings and bases and the again the quality is beyond reproach. Any one of the above are top quailty.

Re: Best rings and bases?

Near Maunfacturing also makes outstanding bases and rings. I have yet to find anything that matches the quality of Richard's stuff.

Re: Best rings and bases?

+1 for Seekins.

The only thing that would have been nicer is to have their own recommended torque settings, but it really isn't a problem at all. Some searching lead me to a post from Glen in 09 recommending 55in# for the base of the rings and 15in# for the tops.

Re: Best rings and bases?

I have both Leupold Mark 4 and Seekins. For my money the Seekins has better fit and finish. I also find the design superior as the tongue that fits into the picatinny cross-slot is actually machined into the underside of the ring versus the Leupold which is a machined cross-bolt I believe.

Re: Best rings and bases?

Is it just me or does Seekins sounds like a winner?

I will be purchasing some soon, thanks for all the help!

I concur. There are other very nice rings and one-piece bases available, but NEAR Manufacturing makes the very best rings and bases that are commercially-available. NEAR is the very best in design, execution, and finish, bar none.
