I have and new National Match M1A and want to put and scope on it. I have a budget of about 400.00 for the scope. I would like your idea's on what would be the best for the money please. Thanks for your help :)

Hi iowmedic,

Can you please give us an idea of what you want to do with this rifle. Will you hunt with it, only punch paper/steel, etc? Since it is the Natinal Match I am going to assume it is for more target shooting than anything.

Depending on your answers will help us get you to the right place.

As for mention on the super sniper from SWFA, that scope in 10x42 runs right at $300 and is an excellent scope. The Bushnell 10x40 is another excellent choice for fixed power scopes around $230.

10x provides a very useful magnification range and has been used for many many years at the 1k yard line. Also, if there is a store near you go see if you can look through some scopes to get an idea if fixed or variable power is right for you.

If you want a variable power scope your options will be more limited in the sub $400 range but there are plenty of good deals out there. Good luck with the purchase and with some extra input and a few more posts I'm sure you will end up happy with your choice. Check the for sale section here too.

Thank you for the info.

I'll take generall shooting as in laying down some good groups at the 100, maybe some deer hunting/medium game every now and then, and steel/paper punching to the 800. If I am off, let me know.

For a fixed power, the SWFA 6x42 in miliradians would be an excellent choice. 6x will help with the distance but also be very useful at closer ranges. You will also be able to get a nice set of rings to go with this scope and still be under your budget.

I prefer Mils as I find it easier to calcute things in meters versus inches, personal choice though.

For a variable power, there are several 3-9 or 3-10x scope out there in that price range.

I don't have any experience with that exact model but a lot of the guys around here run the MTAC in 1-4x24 on thier AR's and from what I have seen through them, they are good quality and are overall a very good value. The exact model you are looking at is over budget, but I think will be worth it. Also, check the optics for sale as a lot of guys sell great scope for roughly that price that fall very close to the specs of the 4.5-14 you mention.

I did just see thess in the classifieds. I dont know the guys, just posting the links as they are great deals.

Some Voretex Demo Scopes from one of the Hide sponsors

Another option to add to the list of possibles.

Im using the SWFA SS 16x on my Loaded M1A and have shot it out to 450 with zero issues. Reticle is nice and thin with nicely defined mil dots. Price point is right for a 1.5-1 MOA semi auto rifle thats never gonna put 5 through the same hole at 1k yards.
