I go straight to the source. Have a friend that works there and he gives me the heads up when its ready. Great bottle but very expensive.

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

if you can find some pick up a bottle of George T Stagg
I got some for my b-day and love it. it only comes out on special occasions though. I stick to bookers, bakers, basil hadens, noahs mill, woodford reserve (the only decent stuff you can get in a big bottle), buffalo trace, and i'm sure i'm missing a few. try them all they are all great in their own way.

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

I've heard some whistling in the wind about it, but have not made the contact to make it happen, due to being soo busy i can barely think straight. hopefully this summer i can make it happen.

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

Blanton's?

I had a Fuente Case de Fuente last night. The thing has been sitting in my box for close to six years. I was expecting something really good. The Buffalo Trace was let down by the cigars lack of anything substantial until I hit the halfway mark. At that point it was barely giving a slight allspice and a very slight pepper through the nose. Totally unremarkable. Should have smoked that Gurkha Vintage Shaggy XO Maduro...

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

Picked up a bottle of Elijah Craig 18 year old yesterday, and wow I really like this bourbon. I drink it neat, and hot damn that is good. Smells kinda like Bookers in the glass, but without the intense a burn...which is good sometime, but the 18 is a nice balance. Thumbs up!

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

The 12 is better TOPO

Mellower, more flavor, but it's ALL good!
CHeck out the 'Bardstown Whiskey Society'. They send you rebate stuff for buying any of the Bardstown stuff(Elijah Craig, Rittenhouse, Bernheim's...)

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

Ehhh, all Kknob Creek is, is Jim Beam Black Label 8 Year Old aged an extra year in the barrel!

Or in other words, darn good sippin whiskey!

I can't wait to see a good friend in the near future who is coming down for a visit while on business. I have a little Bourbon, some nice cigars to smoke, and you KNOW that BBQ will be fired up with a good hunk of meat

Whoa! If you are in here giving advice on what bourbon to drink and you don't know Blanton's then you need to take a big step backwards and find a bottle. Its probably the best small batch bourbon produced.

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

Blantons is good, but Elmer T Lee, is a little better to me. If the master distiller puts his name on it, you expect a very fine bourbon.

Elmer is the master distiller of Blantons

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

91 degrees, but nice in the shade. Three fingers of Bookers in a big mug, over ice and water. Shame was all we had to grill was the chicken. Best part is that (this being my custody weekend) my 12 year old kept hanging at my side asking a ton of "how to" questions. I know that it isn't rocket science, but showing him the finer points of cooking on the pit made my day.

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

Though I'm more of a scotch guy, I have to say that Elijah Craig 18 and Woodford Reserve rank pretty high on my list. I'm not that big a fan of Blantons, Bookers, or Bakers. Mainly due to the strong finish. As far as the best whisky goes, it's all about your tastes.

ooohhh it IS rocket science! Good flavor without burning the stuff up is an ART FORM mijo! I can relate to being the kid too. Many alternating Saturday's were spent getting answer's from Pop whether it was grilling meat, or wrenching the '67 'E' Type Jag or the '63 Ford Ranchero with the 357ci Windsor(beat to shit looking Corvette killer) Man you shoulda seen the look on a 'vette owner's face when he got beat by a crap red/primer/faded red ranchero that had yellow grease pencil on teh tail gate 'Slipshod Construction Company'

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

OK, I'm going to show my simple hillbilly SW Ark side here. Several yrs ago, Jim Beam quit distributing 7yr 80 proof in Ark. You can't find this in Ark, Tex, Mo, La, but you can find it in Ok everday of the week. When we go to Tulsa to the gun show, We'll pick up 3-4 cases to carry us till the next trip. I would highly recommend you chk your state and see if it carrys 7yr-80 proof Jim beam. It is not on there website and some liquor stores will tell you they don't make it, some will tell you if Jim Beam makes it they can get it but they can't. A strange deal but excellent Bourbon. Usually runs around $30 for a 1.75L, a true bargain.

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

the Sunday joint went on a 04:00. Nice brisket on the Big Green Egg. A bit early for a bourbon but perhaps a little Bloody Mary here shortly to start the day, maybe a nice CAO or Arturo Fuente later with a walkabout...........

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

While Maker's Mark is my daily tipple, I do enjoy some of the small batch stuff.

Love Baker's and Pritchard's Double Barrel for special occasions. They are both smooth and complex with an aftertaste that leaves you wanting more!

Next succes sharing check from work goes to buy a bottle of Pappy Van Winkles Family Reserve, but I have to take a road trip to get it...haven't seen it for sale in Wyoming.

Not much finer in life than sitting on the porch watching the sun go down over the mountains while sipping a fine bourbon and toking on a Punch or Acid.

Oh, and any of you fellas who put ice, water, or anything else in a fine bourbon should have to clean your bathroom with your toothbrush! BLASPHEMERS!

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

You said it RJ! When the smoker is lit, it's time for a pour and a smoke to start the day, afterall, we have earned our days of relaxation as we smoke meat for the time to sit with friends and let the stories flow among the smoky air and relaxing breeze.

Noah, while I do use a few ice cubes in my bourbon, I always take the first pour from the bottle neat. There are times I also prefer that sweet brown liquor neat instead of on ice as well. I do have to say this though, by dropping the proof down just a hair, and cooling the liquid down, there are so many more flavor's that open up in a good bourbon

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

I you really want to get a good handle on the taste notes of great bourbon, you need to take the proof down to 70-75. This reduces the alcohol content and that little burn, and you get the full taste of the bourbon. An ice cube in 3-4 ounces is about right to do the trick. This is why the old boys would do a little "bourbon and branch".

Bottom line...enjoy it any way you like it.

HMMMM...almost time for a pour and good cigar.

Blanton's is good stuff however I would have to say the best small batch ever produced is Mitcher's US*1

Hmmmm - best small batch bourbon has to be Pappy Van Winkle. I've had a few bottles of 23 year old and it is simply amazing. Has a warm fruit note with a hint of the wood barrel flavor. The after taste is elegant and buttery. If you want to drop the coin I recommend that. Its made in Louisville, which is crazy because not much of anything good comes out of there.

Half a bottle of Booker's gone and a BIG bird in the bag. Mr. Switchblade and Mr. RJW, I tip my chapeau to you, sirs. My Uncle is quite pleased with the whiskey and a fine day in the woods ended successfully. Great friends made in the bonds of hunting and fine whiskey enjoyed. This is what makes the difference between simply living and enjoying life.

I loft my UT colored highball glass to you!!

If you are going to drink a fine BOURBON such as Bookers.... please don't insult it by calling it whiskey! If its made in KY, its bourbon. Everywhere else its whiskey and junk!

Funny thing about that, my bottle of Booker's says on the label "The whiskey contained in this...."
It seems ok for them to call it what it is whiskey. So long as it's got that e in whiskey.

From the Smallbatch.com website:

In 1992, Booker Noe introduced his own signature bourbon, Booker's® True Barrel Bourbon. Inspired by a 200-year-old tradition, Booker's is the first bourbon bottled straight-from-the-barrel, uncut and unfiltered. First created as a holiday gift for his special friends, Booker's whiskey was so well-received that he decided to make it available to bourbon lovers worldwide; much to the joy of spirit connoisseurs everywhere.

I think on Scotland has the patent on "WHISKY". Otherwise "Whiskey" isn't a bad thing.

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

Whiskey is a distillate made from the mash of fermented grain and aged in wooden barrels. Bourbon is made up of at least 51% corn, and aged in new charred oak barrels. Bourbon bottle from the barrel with no filtration. All bourbon is a whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon.

Now everyone go enjoy your Bourbon Whiskey.

Re: Best Small Distillery Bourbon

Switch, I think you lost me on that one. Can you explain a little more. Buffalo Trace is my go to drink, and if I read right PVW is also made there. Are you saying that PVW is coming out in sample sizes?
