I'm considering the purchase of a set of binoculars in place of a spotting scope. If possible, I would like a set that I could see shot placements out to 600 =/- yards. A big consideration is cost. Hopefully I can find something for $500 or less. Not sure if my quest is reasonable but would appreciate any comments/recommendations. Thanks.

500 or less is a tight budget. If i were you i would demo a set of Maven's 12X. Their factory direct pricing in theory is supposed to bring a lot of bang for your buck. With the demo program you could test them out and if they fit your needs order them and if not return them.

You will get educated info from @gr8fuldoug but my dumbass response is a spotting scope may serve you better and have the realization that at that distance seeing any shot hole is a challenge - that is why typically 6 inch spotting discs are used to spot shot holes in high power competitions.
If you do decide on binos for that distance realize you will need a tripod and they will not be useful binos for hand held use if the mag goes much beyond 8.

I appreciate your comments/recommendations. Whenever I try to save some money on equipment I always end up spending quite a bit more to achieve what I'm actually looking for. I agree that, in the end, a spotting scope is probably my best option. Thanks to recommendations from various forum members I have always purchased the best equipment for my requirements.

I have some Minox 10X52HD's that do pretty good, IIRC I got some demos from Cameralandny for a smoking deal. That said I do usually use a spotter with more magnification for that range.
The Bushnell Forge 10x binos will do 600 yards and more - I've used mine out to 1200 yards, but I prefer the 15s at those distances - 1k and in is easy.
My suggestion as well, I have used the Bushnell Forge 10x most this past year for PRS matches. Superb binos at a very attractive price. I may pick up the forge 15x at some point also, for spotting misses/dust past 800 yards. But as most PRS targets are 300-700 yards, my 10x have been quite adequate.

For sure, a great bargain. I looked through everything, Canon IS 10x, Swarovski, etc, superb optics no doubt. But the Bushnell are much closer in clarity, brightness, than most folks would think considering they are a fraction of the price.
Same here. I have the 10x42 and the 15x56s as well. For the money, they're damn good! The glass is very clear. Good contrast. I have no problem spotting impacts on steel at 1000+. Obviously the 15s are better at 1k, but the 10s were very usable
I got a laugh this weekend at the Altus Kestrel match when people would ask if I saw their impacts on the bus stage. My usual response was "Yep, saw it just fine..." usually followed by them asking where they were hitting, because they couldn't see a damn thing in the mirage. I ran my 15s all weekend without issues.
When I am ROing, they're always going to be on a tripod. I haven't really used them much off of it, to be honest. That said, you can still hold them, but effectiveness may be hit and miss depending on distance, shake, etc.
If you are willing to bump your price some I think you will find a big difference between $500 binos and $1000 binos. I know that is double but I would suggest saving up more and going with the Meopta Meostar, you can get them for around $800 - $900 and they are great. I have used the 10 x 42 for spotting out to 1000K and have had no problem with spotting impacts and watching trace.
