Bipod height

Currently have a Harris 6-9 hbrm (leg notches, no cant or pan) that I have decided to upgrade in prep for probably getting my Tikka in January.

Looking at going with either the atlas psr bt46-nc or bt47-nc or maybe the 5h and getting the rrs btc pro clamp. I think the 5h would be a little much for my needs.

How do you decide what bipod height to buy? At what point do you decide you need leg extensions?

If it matters I am 5'6".

Going to be shooting prone, sitting, bench, or what? I like 6-9ish for prone and bench.

I only like 6-9 for bench type shooting. Anything in the field I like the 9-13 (ish) range. I like the height of the tall CAL.

the benches at the range i visited recently force you to extend your bipod pretty much all the way out for the elevated targets.
they are higher up as you go out farther.
i went with an accu-tac SR-5 G2, which is 8" min at 90deg, but 6.25" at 45deg, so you can still get almost as low as the harris it replaced.
i would have been unable to use any rear bag at all if my bipod wasn't able to extend beyond 9" for the farthest targets out (~600 yards), unless i had something to put under the feet of the bipod.

it is a little big and not lightweight, but it is very solid. not super popular brand yet though like atlas.

5h is 5.5-10.5

Probably not sitting. Want to get into prone and bench and branch out from there. Half thinking I should go the Bt47 just wondering will I miss the less than 7" height.

is it 7" even at 45 degrees?

i think a higher bipod just means you need a little higher rear bag, unless you just happen to have a sweet spot hold at 6"

Your 5'6", you would very likely not need, nor want, the taller bipod offerings for typical shooting situations. I use a Harris 9-13 with 2-3 notches out and just today ordered an Atlas CAL2 Tall. But I'm 6'6" 320 with a 60" chest diameter. I own two Atlas PSRs and suggest you research Atlas CAL2 before buying a PSR.

I personally prefer a 6-9" for prone field shooting, but some of my friends prefer the taller one. It is a matter of personal preference depending on whether you shoot with your head in more of a vertical position and also whether you do shooting in the field where the longer one can be useful.

The other major consideration is what kind of rear bag you are using. I use my Game Changer for a rear bag which allows a wide variety of height options depending on which way I turn the bag. This gives me flexibility in targeting without having to adjust the bipod hight at all. If you use a smaller rear bag with fewer options you may need to adjust the bipod far more often and also matching the height of bipod and rear bag may be more important.

i have the bt46 and hbrms 6-9....i have never bought extensions for either. I shoot majority off of a bench but when i get to shoot out side my local range were usually shooting prone. Im 6ft with a beer belly and no neck. So i have honestly never thought of a taller bipod unless shooting on a downhill slope with an up hill shot and i cant get the but of the stock low enough, at that point rifle getting mounted on a tripod and taking a seated shot.

Why go with the cal vs the psr?

I figured it might be nice to have the pan feature available so I'm not missing out on something that I might have a use for later. I have shot off some benches that weren't perfectly square to the target.

I have a Atlas BT46 LW17 PSR 5-9” with ADM lever. This is my go to bipod now for prone shooting. Still have a Harris BRM-S with Larue mount as back up.
I used to have a Harris 9-13” it was too high for me, sold that.
Probably will save up for a TBAC.

having both the atlas and the ckypod , either way as long as what ever you get fits you I can't see them doing you wrong I do want to try the atlas 5 h from a arca rail if it all fits and one of those that wrap around the barrel frank had a video on them , I thought they looked neat enough to want to try or just another excuse to buy another gun , oh god and another scope . Either way more expensive toys are fun to have .

If you don't want to drop atlas money, look at tip top bipods. Dumb name, good bipod. I've got one and its everything the Harris should be from the factory. Cant, swivel, notched legs, and a lock lever standard. It's metal and sturdy just like the harris is. I've been shooting it on my creed for a couple years now.

Part of the reason I am asking is this is my current setup on my AR.

Forgot to mention above that my harris has the hawk hill feet and is on a Larue qd pic mount. It measures 8.125 to the bottom of the rail. Has seemed to work mostly fine so far.

I still like the Harris for most stuff, for lighter rifles, for AR's and such. My SR25 has an Atlas but it's pretty heavy, and an LRA on a DTA .50 that's quite heavy. I just find the 6-9 Harris suitable for most of my needs short of that and add a podloc on it and it's the titties IMO. I usually don't extend the legs either, on ideal ground in the prone it works fine for me most of the time.

I do like the fact that you can position ones like the Atlas at different angles and use that to reduce height though.

agreed. this allows a greater range even for larger bipods.
