Bolt gun storage: Open or closed

For me... open bolt storage lets me fit more guns in the gun safe.

Not sure if it stresses the bolt any more than closed, trigger released.

What say you?

I don't understand the difference, the rifle should be fine either way. I pull the bolt when I transport in a case because the bolt handle sticks up but that is the only reason.

Bolts out is probably the only measure that makes a difference.

Looks to me with your bolt rearward the handle likely impedes more than of it were closed.

The only thing I think about storage is focused on two things.

A. Safes never hold what they are advertised to hold or what you hope they will hold.

B. All my guns, as much as possible can be done, are stored bore down. I want oils and shit dribbling out the bore onto the floor of the safe not back into my action or the rear of the stock. Some .22s due to overcorwding get to sit on their heels but most of my other guns are bore down. If you think the safe interior or your environment are conducive to moisture than I wouldnt bore down because I wouldnt want that last 1/2 inch of barrel getting pitted or rusty.

Open bolt actually falls into a void in the safe, sorta "underneath" the scope...

This is true, but there is no chance of catching another rifle at all with the bolt. They sit up on the shelf.

I dont have multiples of any brand, so its easy to tell the difference.

That's cool. My question is whether the "open" bolt stresses its internals any more than "closed" with trigger released...

For the most part, bolts out and in baggies, rifles in socks. This approach helps me stack them closer to one another without scratching finishes, etc...

Back to the original question. Cocked bolt or not is my take.

Technically it would/should make a difference, but in practice, I expect not.

If it did, the question probably wouldn't have as many responses. The answer would be obvious. Since it isn't, that too is significant.

I've had rifles stored for years without being disturbed, and with the bolt closed and cocked. They exhibited no tendency toward light primer hits.

YMMV.
