I am having a hard time closing the bolt on my rem 700 in .223. It doesn't matter what ammo, it just takes a lot of force to close the bolt. Is it the bolt or the chamber?

If the bolt closes just fine on an empty chamber, then my bet is the chamber was not cut properly.

If this is a new rifle, it doesn't really matter, you need to call Remington and send it back for warranty service. Be prepared to receive a new action in your current stock.

If this is a rebarreled rifle, then you need to take it back to the gunsmith that barreled it.

If you really want to be sure, then order a .223 "GO" headspace gauge from Brownells, remove the ejector and see if the bolt will close on the "GO" gauge.

School me on this one please. What is the fix on an issue like this? New Extractor or more chamber work?

Thanks

If it's the extractor, then you won't need chamber work. You may need bolt work if the groove for the extractor was improperly cut. The troubleshoot for that is to pull the extractor out and check headspace without it, but you better have a replacement extractor on hand. They generally do not like being removed.

Re: Bolt is difficult to close on a Remington 700 sps

Hi mate,

Havent posted on the forum for ages but i saw your topic and thought id throw in my $0.02.

I also HAD a Remmy sps varmint 223 a while back. I purchased it brand new and took it to the range. I ran some cheap Federal PowerShoks & winchester SuperX and noticed the bolt was extremely hard to close on both types of ammo. Took a look at all my cases and found deep scratches along the brass (federals were harder to close as the brass isnt as soft as the winchester). I know it wasnt the feeding ramps as some advises me it could be. So i took it back to the gunshop and the guy said the chamber is full of burs!

Gun ended up being sent to the Remmy/Raytrade nominated gunsmith in Oz but when i got it back it was untouched and still had the same problem. I got fed up with the bad service so i took it to my gunsmith to take a look. He poured some Cerrosafe like metal down the chamber and took a mold of it, which confirmed the burs and the poorly finished chamber. Long story short, he polished the chamber out and it was good to go since!

Im not saying this is your problem but to me it sounds familiar. Could be a headspacing or extrator issue like mentioned above but the burring in my chamber was gouging against my cases and made everything super tight as the bolt locked. This in my opinion doesnt say much for Remmys QC. My next rifles were Tikka t3, mauser & Sako TRG and i havent looked back.

Again just my $0.02 and i wish u all the best with ur sps.

I agree with this,

99% of the time when you encounter this issue in the .223's it's the extractor. The claw is a little too long. Not sure if this is a supplier spec problem or if Remington is just not cutting the extractor grove deep enough in the bolt nose.

Order a new extractor. File down the edge of the extractor claw before you install it and you will be good to go. Remember it don't take much. Practice on the one you take out but don't use an extractor you have removed. Not a good idea to remove the extractor and put it back in. You take it out put in a new one.

The extractor has some spring to it to allow the extractor to compress and the claw to snap over the case rim. Problem is the claw is too big and once the extractor is compressed in the extractor grove it takes some force to cam over the case rim.

I have seen some .223 that there is no spring to the extractor and when trying to close the bolt the extractor will cut a grove into the case rim instead of snapping over.

Re: Bolt is difficult to close on a Remington 700 sps

I actually had this exact same problem about 6 months ago when I got my 223 VTR. I called remington and the paid to ship it back, fixed it, and had it back in my hands in about 2 weeks. Jus give em a call, they will take care of ya.

And to back up the guys above, they did indeed replace the extractor.
