When dry firing I have noticed considerable bolt jump. At least I think it is considerable. That's really what I'm wanting to find out here. When I dry fire the bolt handle jumps up by nearly 1/4". Is this average? Better? Worse? Is this even something I should be the least bit concerned about? It just seems that something must be out of spec that causes it to jump to a more relaxed state. Any insight?

Issue w/ combination of bolt handle, and firing pin assembly timing . Most say leave it alone; but I couldn't!

Re: Bolt jump Rem 700 SA

If its causing any issues, yes. If not, I would wait until the rifle is down for other work, then have the timing looked at.

That said, both of my 700 customs jump when empty, but it has no effect on rounds downrange. One has barely any extraction timing, but runs fine.

It all depends on what you can live with. If ANYTHING makes my confidence waver that the rounds aren't going where they should I know myself enough that it will get adressed. The more I shoot the more I realize the mental things count way more than I used to think they did. Confidence in my gear is HUGE to me, I've gotten rid of stuff that is perfectly good, because in MY head it wasn't.

Bolt jump isn't one of those things for me I guess. For you, I can't answer.

Re: Bolt jump Rem 700 SA

It doesn't bother me while shooting. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something that definitely needed attention. The rifle will be down in the near future for a barrel and a new bolt. It will be taken care of then.

chamber an empty case and see if it does it... i dry fire my rifle all day and night with no snap cap and yes the bolt jumps... its just loose in there without a chambered round... worry when the accuracyy drops off... i say perfectly normal...

i know exactly where your coming from... gotta have your mind right or accuracy suffers..

Re: Bolt jump Rem 700 SA

this happens a lot in remmy's and even in some custom actions....mostly a function of several different pieces and parts, that cock on close....and slop in the rear of the action.

get an action too tight, and it gets tuff to run the bolt smoothly in them rapid fire barrel burning stages.

on the other hand ...too loose and accuraccy suffers and the action maybe has been worn to the extent that it needs to be shimmed...what is it the tikka or sako got a nylon or durlin shim that encompoasses the rear of the bolt that makes those actions smooth as butter.

but i digress.....

aftermarket bolt knob jobs and aftermarket stocks somtimes create a timing issue that do not allow complete cycleing of the bolt....as in it will not allow total lug engagement, when the bolt is up against the stock in the slot....(you will see wear marks on the handle and stock.

all in all.....prolly 90% if the actions out there got this issue ......not really any great shakes until accuracy and or consistancy suffers.......you will know it when it happens
