Hello all,
I have recently duracoated my Rem 700 .300WM in a McRees stock. I sealed off the action so I'm fairly confident that paint did not get inside. However, when I try to the pull the bolt back when extracting a round, the bolt is sticking. It seems that while pulling the bolt rear-ward, the more of an upward pull on the handle the harder it sticks. Also, I took it out shooting in about 20 deg F, and the bolt was completely sticking until I really pulled hard on it(due to lube freezing?). Any idea how this could be happening and more importantly, how can i fix this? Thank you!!

Re: Bolt sticking when extracting round

If you coated the bolt and the tolerances were fairly tight to begin with then that could most likely be the problem. Never sprayed duracoat, but I spray a lot of cerakote. I would guess you added at least .002-.0035 min to the overall diameter of the bolt.

Re: Bolt sticking when extracting round

If its a new gun it will smoothen up with use, I've had a few bolt guns that were a little tight and sticky untill the get worn in.

If i'm in a hurry to get it all smooth and slippery, i'll wipe the lube off he bolt and out of the raceway and work the action a couple hundred times, then reoil with militec or breakfree. That always does the trick.

Re: Bolt sticking when extracting round

I did coat the bolt lightly(one thin coat), however it was only on the main cylinder portion and not the bolt face area. In fact, I taped off to about 1.5 inches from the bolt face to make sure I wouldn't get any paint in there. Could this still cause the sticking? Any way to fix this besides continuous use? Thanks for all the help guys!

So I still have this problem. However, I found out more details on the issue so I'm hoping to get some more advice. I checked the bolt and the action and neither have been painted on parts that could cause the sticking. The funny this is that when there is no round being extracted it works just fine and is smooth. But when I put some rounds into it, it can barely close the bolt. It also has a hard time opening it and it feels like something is holding it really tight. When I pull super hard on the bolt rearward it will suddenly release and eject the casing. Any ideas on what the issue could be? And oh yeah, I had a new barrel put on it just before I had painted it and hadn't fired it yet. Thanks!

Are you using reloads and if so were they full length sized? If they have been fired in your old chamber and only neck sized that could be your problem. I don't think the painting is your problem unless you got paint on the lugs or in that area of the action. Since it seems to be fine without a round in the chamber it sounds like a issue with your head spacing or brass maybe.

I have only used factory ammo for it, no reloads. I'm starting to think it's the head spacing that is the issue. I called my gunsmith who installed the barrel and he said he would take a look at it tomorrow. I'll let you know if that was the issue. Thanks again!
