Loved my Lowa's, looking forward to the next pair!

Re: boots ?????????????

If money is NO issue:

Meindl Army Pro
Lowa Hunter GTX TX (black/tactical version of Hunter)

Danner FT. Lewis is also good but has less support.

Cheers,

Master Diver

Re: boots ?????????????

I bought some HAIX boots at the shot show, WOW they are very bad ass boots, will NEVER go back to issued boots again!

My hunting boots are Kenitreks and they are the Cats meow too, use to use Danners for years and needed a new pair every year because they would wear out my Kenitreks are going on 3 yrs now and still doing good.

Both boots are pricey but totally worth it

Re: boots ?????????????

asolo all the way unless you need a higher boot

get them from REI and you can take them back whenever you want, no matter the wear. my brother in law hiked the entire appalachian trail, wore his pair out, took them back and got a new pair at no charge.

Re: boots ?????????????

I've got a pair of Danner Acadia's and two new pair of Danner Ft Lewis. I consider these to be for field/heavy use, they are tough as nails, last for years and are easily resoled when needed.

I purchased a pair of Under Armor boots about a month ago and have been wearing them Mon-Fri since. They're very light and very comfortable but I don't think they would stand up to heavy abuse. UNDER ARMOUR BOOTS

Re: boots ?????????????

My experience of backpacking, hiking, hunting, and military over the past 40 years is that YOU need to stick your stinky feet into what ever pair of boots you are planning to buy and try them on. Nothing more crippling than a crappy pair of boots. Remember even within a specific brand and size of boot there are differences. Folks throwing out a brand that works for them is a good start but then YOU have to make final decision. Danners never worked for me and I'm in awe of folks who can buy boots or shoes on line and are happy with the way they fit. Gore tex works....for about a week then it clogs up. Steel toes.....in climates and situations where weight and cold are not factors. Soles are very important. Vibram soles that are made of a very durable compound to last are VERY slippery on wet rocks/ice etc. Softer compounds wear quickly but grip better. How much weight are you going to carry while wearing? Bottom line-boots are like everything else we do here....a tool for a specific job. My favorite boots for the money are Vasque and when they were made in America Georgia. If I ever think I will get a chance to use them I would consider White boots (custom made) lots of forest service professionals/fire guys use them. Pricy $$$$ though. I have never regretted spending the money it takes for good boots
Good Luck with your search.

Re: boots ?????????????

Good points made by Trgrtime56 above.

Someone mentioned Hanwag boots earlier in the thread. I have a pair of Hanwag Mountain Light GTX boots, bought them from Lantrop & Sons 4-5 years ago [img:center]http://lathropandsons.com/catalog/index.php[/img] and absolutely love them. The Lanthrops are podiatrists full time and hunters/boot sellers part time. They know their way around footwear. They'll go through a rather painstaking process with you to make sure you're getting the right size, but it is worth the extra time and effort. Like any quality boot, they are expensive, but have been worth it IMHO. Rugged, comfortable and long-lasting.

Several styles available, here are the Mountain Lights

Re: boots ?????????????

Justin AQHA ropers for daily wear, most other times too, if looking at hard terrain, then I reach for a pair of Corcoran Marauders in SAGE green.

Re: boots ?????????????

I have been wearing a pair of ASOLO Echo's for a few months now. Easily the most comfortable boot I've ever worn.

While in the Corps I kept about 6-9 pairs of boots on hand for inspection, Blue side, Green side, and those fun fun humps.

I usually prefer anything from Danner...I have a pair of Acadia's that I bought in 1996 that I wore all four years in the corp and now at work...I don't even know how many times they have been resoled. Great boots...but heavy.

I was wearing Merril Sawtooth's previously at matches and any time I wasn't wearing sneakers. They finally gave up the ghost and to be honest they weren't as comfortable as I thought they would be.

These new ASOLO's...really nice. Only thing is I think they are discontinuing this model...Echo. You can still find them and they are just over $100 which is cheap, I think.

Re: boots ?????????????

Buy the Danner Acadia and you will never be disappointed, I wear them every day and one pair I have had for ten years and they have been resoled seven times. The boots are not cheap but they are worth every penny.

Re: boots ?????????????

After ankle surgery I went looking for a "better boot". The Hanwags were at the top of the list but the lead-time was long and outside my window. I finally ended up getting a pair of La Sportiva Glaciers built on a Makalu last. They have been a very good boot getting me safely up and down on a couple fo elk hunting and a number of chukar hunting trips.
Locally the "extreme" hunters have been opting out for Kenetrek boots. I finally broke down and purchased a pair of Mountain Extremes this fall and after having worn out my 6th pair of Aslo's I got a pair of hikers. They seem to grip much better and don't give up that much in support for the steep stuff. I ran the Kenetreks through a chukar hunting season (notoriuously hard on boots) and they held up well.

I really like the Asolo FSN 95 GTX's but typically wear a pair out every year and they haev gone up in price every year. I switched to the Kenetrk hikers. The Kenetreks have held up well but I still liek the Asolo's.

The main thing is find a boot that fits your feet and life style then buy alot as they seem to disappear after a year or two...especially if you REALLY like them.

Re: boots ?????????????

Forgot to mention, Vibram soles are required for me, preferably the ones that have a little green dot on them. I've had 2 pair with that, and they were noticeably superior. Scarpas are the recent pair, and the previous ones were Merrills, also made in Italy.

I agree that older Vasques were superior to the ones you can find today. I had 2 pair of Sundowners decades ago and really liked 'em. I am not interested in boots made in China or Vietnam.

Re: boots ?????????????

Lowa for 25 years..tried all the others.
These always fit right out of the box and need no breakin fo my feet.
First got them in Switzerland for hiking the Alps..this was before the internet and before U could get them in USA. Ther were recommended by a prof. mtn. guide. Love Lowas...

Re: boots ?????????????

Check out Russell Moccasins in New Berlin Wisconsin. They have a web site.
They are custom made boots made to your measurements. They are absolutely the best boots I have very owned. I have had all the manufactures mentioned above in these posts and none of them even come close to the comfort you will get from a custom pair of Russells.
They are at the Safari show in Vegas every year but check out their website and request a catalog.
You choose the type of shoe or boot you want. Then you choose your sole material. Then you choose the material you want the boot made out of. Anything from a gortex to an exotic animal leather or combination. The you measure your foot and arch and other measurements.
I have three sets in different material and heights and love all three.
You will wait about three to four months while they make them.
Well worth it.
