bore cleaner?

Re: bore cleaner?

we did a little test at the range the other day. My very wellk known BR friend says use only Butchs bore shine. Well, ok. Cleaned a pair of rifles with it, then told my buddy, hey, let's try my boretech eliminator. And we got out tons more copper with it.

Now.... I am not one who thinks you have to remove everything down to white metal on every cleaning. Get the powder our for sure, and major copper. I only clean when accuracy starts going down, and most of my tubes are pretty high quality, with lapped finishes. But if I am going to clean, why not do it well? I think anyof the products mentioned here will work fine. pick one you like and use it when you need to.

One thing that struck me about the difference in the BR shooters regimen, they NEVER oil the bore afterwards, they say it takes them 20-50 rounds to recover the accuracy after cleaning if the bore is oiled. And to think of it, most barrels are stainless, if they aren't wet, and filled with powder residue, what is going to corrode?

Re: bore cleaner?

Kroil(The oil that kreeps)It loosens EVERYTHING to be removed by the next patch and you can use it as a lube so you don't have to worry about getting every last bit out . Great for gas guns . Bore scrubber works great too and smells good.

Re: bore cleaner?

I am a big fan of the eleminator for more copper than carbon, I only use it occasionaly, but my #1 go to cleaner is TM Solution with out a dobut the best. Try it and compaire it to what you normally use, you should let it sit for 15-20 min. I do recomend good oil like butches gun oil after cleaning and then patch it dry before shooting, I have no poi shift and no accuracy change from cold bore to heavy fouling.

Re: bore cleaner?

I am telling you guys go out and buy a can of wipe out, clean your gun with your normal stuff until you think it is clean. Then shoot some wipeout down the tube and you will be shocked when you see all the crap you have been missing.

Re: bore cleaner?

I like Outer's Foaming Bore Cleaner. Does the best job in the easiest manner I've seen yet. So simple and effective, it simply begs the question why anyone would want to allow hundreds of rounds worth of crud to accumulate in their bores. The thought, to an Old Marine, is something like listening to someone scrape their fingernails on a blackboard. I can go along with wanting to season a bore; but unless I'm certain my rifle won't be sitting idle for more than a few days, I'm gonna get a jump on bore pitting. Just that simple.

Re: bore cleaner?

I want to like Wipe Out. I have tried to like Wipe Out. I have used it and have not had ANY luck with it. If I am doing something incorrectly let me know because I have tried the accelerant, I have read the directions and still don't feel it works. I truly wish it worked for me as I would buy it by the case.

Re: bore cleaner?

thanks guys. I decided to buy some various brands from midwayusa to test out on my LTR. I did try my friends Slip2000 and Copperzilla and both seem to remove a lot of junk.

Re: bore cleaner?

I been using home brew Ed's Red mix + a dash of Ammonia for a few years now and 'never' looking back . When Carbon layers needs to by striped out. I use whats in the Pic. below. got two cans left and that's more than enough for a lifetime of Bore carbon.

Re: bore cleaner?

We used to make a God awful concoction of Kroil sweets and some other stuff and you damn near had to wear your gas mask to use the stuff. I think we got the recipe from one of the 1/9 STA guys. Does anyone have any recollection of what that recipe is?

To stay on topic I pretty much stick with Montana Extreme .50BMG and Shooters Choice depending on how much cleaning I am doing. As others have said I believe people over clean their guns and really only clean when accuracy starts to drop off.

Re: bore cleaner?

Yesterday I tried gun slick foaming bore cleaner for the first time... not sure how good it worked as i never ever see blue or any copper residues and such as I treat my barrels with smoothkote moly treatment...

I clean the bore every few hundred rounds and then reapply smoothkote...

to be honest it probably doesnt even need to be cleaned, but i just do it every few hundred rounds regardless

Before using this product I have used Sweets 7.62 and Hoppes and they both seem to work well... hoppes smells nice, Sweets smells like ammonia

I still use copper solvent, lead remover (rimfire), and Montana Extreme Oil on occasion, but not nearly as much as the above. </div></div>

This is what I use most of the time on all my guns.I also use non-chlorinated brake clean to blast out really dirty handguns but make sure you test it on a small area of any plastics/polymer may bleachout the color.

Re: bore cleaner?

Bore Cleaner Update:
I purchased some Boretech Eliminator, Butches Bore Shine, and Montana Extreme from Midway. I used all 3 today at the range to clean my 700 LTR. Ammo used was match grade from Hornaday and BlackHills. I cleaned the bore after every single shot following the instuctions on the cleaner. As far as I could tell the Montana Etreme removed the most from the bore. The only thing is it's very strong odor and needs to be used in a well vented room. Thanks for everyones input here.

Clean your weapon again in app. 500 rds or so - when accuracy begins dropping off ....

Re: bore cleaner?

Wipeout. Shoot some in the bore prior to leaving the range and let is soak over night. Use a nylon brush the next day and then swab with some clean patches on a jag to remove residue. Simple and very effective. I run a patch of Kroil through the bore before she goes back in the safe.

WTF haven't you heard barrel break in is BULLSHIT, its just a scam to increase new barrel purchases!

Re: bore cleaner?

Tried wipeout last week, tooooooooo easy.. It works and works well. I've used almost everything and this was by far the easiest.. It takes a couple applications and let it soak a few hrs or longer each time..
