Tried to bore sight my 16" 308 AR with a BSA bore sight and the graph picture is clear underneath my scope.4x12 So is this common on short barrels? And any way to bore sight this before going to the range?

Pull the bolt, put the charging handle between the upper and lower to hold them apart, look through the bore.

Any specific distance you guys use when doing that?
I ask because when I tried that method on a 10" plate at 100 yards with a .50 Beowulf, well, let's just say it didn't exactly help any.

I never bore site anything, using good rings and a target at 30-50 yards to get a single shot to dial the major dope. I don't see why zeroing at 100 should be more than a 4-5 shot ordeal unless you don't have a mil/moa based retical or target that you can determine adjustment with. I think that Bore sighting means alot more to some people for some reason, you can read it on the side of any manufacturers box where there is a rifle/scope combo I would not put too much weight behind it.
Bore sight it at 25 yds in a rest aimed at a target like they mentioned above. Center the target in the barrel as you look through it. Then go to scope and adjust crosshairs to center of the target. When they both show centered, put the bolt back in and confirm zero. Make adjustment by moving crosshairs to bullet impact. Done at 25.

I just look down the bore as others described, except I use the corner of the target or a pizza box, and center the corner in the center of the bore, then carefully raise my head to see through the scope. I think using the corner of something gets me closer.
Agreed; in all rifles I shoot where you can look down the bore, I just set the rifle on some bags, pull the bolt/etc, and point it at a high-contrast target. Once I have that relatively on-target, I adjust the scope to match. Check through bore again to make sure the rifle position didn't shift, check through scope again, then re-assemble rifle. First round is on paper, just adjust as per click values at that distance. I normally do this at 50m or so, and it takes 2rds (3 at most) to be zeroed for that distance.
I went out last week with my 6.5 CM bolt gun, I had previously used a little laser bore sighter at 20 feet and had preset my elevation for 2.4" low, I was about 7" high at 100 so I dialed down 3 mils and fired again. 0.4 mils low. Up 4 clicks and spent the rest of the day shooting 5 shot groups into little 5/8" target pasters. Worked like a dream. Discovered my mags, which work fine with 123 Amax won't feed 139 Scenars so I was push feeding all day but managed to learn something.
Last night I put the little laser thingy back in my bbl and I was 3.25" below bore center line. Set the scope on my LWRC REPR to the same relationship as both scopes have 20 MOA bases. I expect the 308 to be within easy dial on the first shot. The REPR isn't the laser my bolt gun is by a long shot but I love shooting it.

With that method I am usually on paper at 100 yards with my first shot. With two more shot I can have the rifle zero'd or very close.
As others have said... 100 yds you should be able to get it dial in 2-3 shots. Is the theory I go with, not to mention the barrel needs to warm up any ways...
