I purchased a Remmy 700 Varmit from Dick's Sporting Goods and am in the process of upgrading. I have purchased a HS Precision stock. My question is what bottom metal should I purchase for a detachable mag and also how do I eliminate the box attached to the reciever currently? (Or do I?) What makes the most sense for making a reliable package with the best magazines? Any suggestions?

The box attached to the receiver just pulls out. I recently bought a PTG DBM and installed it in a McMillan HTG, and I was very satisfied. The fit and finish on the PTG is first rate, and the price can't be beat.

Personally for a DBM I like one that has a magwell that stick out below the stock line, so that if you rest the rifle on a tree or barricade or something it does not hit the mag and cause a jam or mess up the feeding. Surgeon, stiller and a few others make one like it. I personally went with the stiller because it was a good price and the are local to me.

Another vote for the PTG. I bought the Dicks ADL Varmint special as well. I used a 5R take off as a replacement stock. I sent the stock to Badger for the M5 inlet and they turned it around in a week. The PTG dropped right in and takes the AICS mags.

Jimichanga, The stock I bought was used and the guy said it was a HS Precision off a 5R. That sound right to you? Also, what do you mean by the M5 inlet? Might seem like stupid question but I'm still trying to learn about all this. Does this need to be done by a gunsmith to be right or can it be a drop-in fit?

Jimichanga, The stock I bought was used and the guy said it was a HS Precision off a 5R. That sound right to you? Also, what do you mean by the M5 inlet? Might seem like stupid question but I'm still trying to learn about all this. Does this need to be done by a gunsmith to be right or can it be a drop-in fit?

The stock has to be inletted for the DBM to fit. It sits much deeper in the stock than the factory bottom metal, so it is not a drop in fit. If you have a little mechanical ability, and patience, you can do the inletting yourself.

Okay Gentlemen, I pulled the trigger on the unit from Stockys. As mentioned it's supposed to be the PTG without the engraving.
I ordered the 5-rd mag unit. No other mags were available to purchase separately but since they use the AI mags I'm hopeful I'll locate a source in due time. Any thoughts on 5 vs 10 rd mags? I thought the lower profile would be best for starters.
Now I'll have to research inletting and then off to the world of triggers. I've decided to go with a Timney trigger and will be researching their website to pick the correct model.
Thanks to all for pointing me in the right direction. It's really great to have guys willing to help when going into a new area of shooting. Saves a lot of costly missteps. You guys are great! Thanks again!

A Timney 510 is my recommendation.
Blued= Black
Nickel Plated= Steel colored trigger and safety. I asked Timney about this and it is completely aesthetic. Offers no extra benefits or corrosion resistance.
So I always choose the blued model because it looks better if you have a blued or camo'd rifle.
