So I’m shooting a lot on my Savage HS Precision in .300 WM and really want to get a magazine setup for it that allows more rounds. I’m hopeful for 8-10 rounds total, but anything will help at this point.

However I don’t really understand the whole bottom metal and modifying existing magazine discussions. Every thread I see talks about certain companies and people in the woodworks that do this kind of stuff but everybody uses abbreviations I’m not familiar with.

Is there anyone here, maybe even with firsthand experience I’m hoping, that has had luck achieving what I want that could explain to me? Break it down Barney style if you don’t mind.

It’s pretty simple. Most rifle stocks have that cheap frame with a hinged plate and spring. Bottom metal is just trading that junk for something built a bit better and is built to use magazines. There are different makes and that effects the dimensions and what magazines you can use. That’s it.

I was where you are several years ago, but with a short action Savage.

I sent the stock (B&C Medallist) to CDI Precision Gunworks. They inlet the stock and sold me the bottom metal that replaces your current magazine. They were great to work with, and the turn around was really quick.

While I hate to encourage people to spend their hard-earned money on gun stuff (haha), if you're thinking about switching out the stock now would be a great time to do so.

If it came as a factory HS Precision rifle it should have a side bolt release. On a Savage this is no longer the most common model. Most new guns have the bolt release on the bottom near the trigger guard.

The AICS or Accuracy International Chassis System (stock) bottom metal is the system developed by Accuracy International to work with Remington 700 pattern actions. It has become the standard bottom metal for most actions, let alone the 700.

Because of the similarity between the 700 and 110 actions, there are multiple companies that produce AICS pattern bottom metal for the 110.

Whoever you buy this bottom metal from you need to ensure that the magazine that you bought will work with it.

The original AICS in the form a AICS chassis/stock is moderately tempermental on Magpul AICS pattern magazines. The good thing about the AICS Magpul mag is it is cheap, and works very well with most AICS bottom metals.

Do not buy from PTG, it isn't that they can't make a quality product it is that they never ship anything. And they will charge you a restock fee for not shipping an cancelling your order.
