Fisher & Paykel cooktop started continually sparking.

Should I call a tech to come fix it?

Fuck no! Google "My Fisher & Paykel igniters wont stop"

Bam! An instant redirect to a F&P video telling me how to troubleshoot. Apparently all I have to do is clean the burners. I note one ominous warning "If you can't unscrew the gas tubes they will have to be drilled out".

Won't be my Cooktop, this will be easy. First burner comes apart as planned and is soaking in vinegar.

Second one sure enough fused all together.

Fuck it, ten years, no sense paying someone 1/4 the price of a new cooktop.....lets find out what's made in America.

From @Veer_G S neck of the woods I bought a Blue Star.

    https://www.bluestarcooking.com/cooking/cooktops/36-cooktop/

Blue Star used to be Garland. My work has an old Garland. It's a beast.

Hoping this cast iron treats me well. 22K BTU should sear steak perfectly.

Hey Mac/Veer......Do you have experience with Bluestar ? If so, how long ? How do you like it ? We (well, the wife.....) may be in the market, sooner, rather than later.

We are just 2 different people. How much for parts to fix your old one? Nice cook top by the way. Just a question out of curiosity.

Just bought it. Not installed, no experience. Will be installed in a few weeks.

Nice thing is they build to your gas and you lose nothing as in a conversion.

I run LP so my burners will be same BTU as NG.

If you can do the slide in that would be better as that comes with commercial style drip trays. Being drop in mine won't have that convenience.

Parts probably wouldn't have been much. Three or four brass tubes.

What irks me is $200 just to get the tech into your house than parts and labor beyond that.

Truth be told that tech is worth the cost, he deserves a living, I'm just a cheap bastard that likes doing shit myself.

I have had good luck with Miele appliances being able to order parts and fix them.

What I like about Blue Star is it's analog.

The igniters are about the only thing that could break and they just unplug for replacement.

It's a stainless steel box with 5 valves, some stainless manifold tube, and about 60 pounds of cast iron. No tiny screws holding burner stacks together, no digital, wires, no ambiance lighting on the control knobs, no decorative plastic to melt.

Only downside is that burners are open and my wife is prone to boil overs, there will be some removal on occasion of burners to clean in the top box.

Thanks for the response. I would fix my old myself. But that is how I am. I was just curious of cost.

LP=propane? if so then you will use less gas than NG. Propane is burns hotter than NG.

Yes Im partial to fixing it when able but in this case at 10 plus years of use and the design its a case of rebuilding rather than replacing. The F&P top served us well its just time for it to go and be replaced by the last cook top Ill buy until we sell this house in exchange for less house more land.

The fact the appliance runs on gas has me erring more to the side of safety than homeowner fixes.

Odd you say that because when the tops use a conversion kit they generally drop about 3000 BTU per burner switching from NG to LP.

The F&P top we have was converted and it boiled water or fried eggs adequately enough fpr me.

The new top is coming built fro propane and the liuterature states it has no BTU loss - you get 20K just like the NG unit.

Only thing in the house hooked to LP is the cooktop. I run a 60 gallon tank and it gets filled once a year. I dont think the bigger burners will effect that.

You are fine, I am not trying to be disrespectful in anyway. My "way" has bit me in the ass before.

Propane has 2.5 times more BTU per cubic foot than NG. We have NG here, I have it on my patio and every time I buy a patio accessory I have to open up the jet (normally come with conversion instructions) to get the proper operation (same BTU rating).

I've had a Bluestar RNB range for almost 12 years now. I'm spoiled rotten by its 22k BTU burners. It's required exactly zero repairs the entire time. Thing just works and keeps on working (I guess partially because there ain't much to go wrong!). I love the open burners, it's the only way to go for serious cooking.

Be sure your gas line is big enough to feed it! I think for a 36" a 1/2" NPT is fine. I brought a 3/4" line to my 48" RNB.

Yeah, you (me really) opened a can of worms.......I made the mistake of forwarding the Bluestar webpage to the wife. She's upstairs right now and I think she's ordering up a new unit as I'm writing this. As she was headed up the stairs, she did say that she like the looks of the Slide-in best.

Thanks Bud.....:) (Oh, and you do know that new countertops go along with a new cooktop, right ? BTW, what's your wife's e-mail addy so I can return the favor ? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:)

I swear a $2 part will fix the spark all the time igniters

just a toggle switch/ momentary switch- use it to break the circuit. press it when you want the igniters to fire
That is a little redneck for me. But once when I said something about a repair like that I got back " will it solve the problem" to which I reluctantly replied "yes". That was the end of that conversation.

If you are building new slide in would be the way to go to gain the drip pans, just line those suckers with foil and toss them every once in a while.

Made in USA/QC rep were my concerns.

Blue Star and Wolf were my two choices US Made, good rep they build their products gas specific. Wolfs burners are on the anemic side but that appeals to candy makers and saute' peeps. Im into bacon, eggs, beef, big pots of boiling water and cast iron griddles so the BTUS are neat.

Thermador and Jenn Air are also US but require conversion to use LP and suffer performance wise as a result.

There are other "boutique" very nice US made tops out there but I only concerned myself with common showroom stuff being in a bind I need to have this for XMas.

My only concerns are if my LP tank plumbing cant supply the top or my granite doesnt have an extra 1/2 inch of wiggle room to fit the Blue Star in place of the current F&P.

The installer will come out and confirm the install. If it comes to cutting granite or changing LP service lines Ill be getting the Wolf.

and stay away from my wife.

We got a recall notice on our air bags in the family car a few weeks ago.

Im going to get it done next service. We dont live in a high corrosion climate so our air bag inflator is not likely to explode itself into anyones skull nor do I plan on crashing.

Anyway my wife has the recall sheet on the counter everyday telling me I have to get it done "Now!" like its the most deadly thing in the world.

It will get done next service, fuck it.

    Thats her mindset.

Me adding rube goldberg switches to the gas top probably wont fly especially since in September a local gas company over pressurized a line and blew up some twenty houses.

I know a 60 gallon LP tank and going from low pressure NG to high pressure NG dont equate but she doesnt.

Not for nothing, but we have an Electrolux (AmeriYank?) cooktop to go with our double wall oven that we'd spoke about here quite some time ago. We've not had any problems with the cooktop or burners at all. We've been running it here for 6-7 years, or something.

Ironically, our washing machine is a Frigidaire, which we just found out is ALSO an Electrolux product. They make a LOT of stuff, and place different stickers on it/them..... so just a point to ponder.

Lots of incest in the appliance industry.

I understand at one point every dish washer in the US was made at the same place just they came out with different badges and features.

What really needs to be built right is refrigerators, not impressed with what is out there unless you go Sub Zero or some boutique brand.

Everyone struggling to get energy star ratings builds boxes with compressors that barely work.
