BOYDS STOCK ON MY SAVAGE PROJECT DOESNT FIT.-MODIFY????

I have a savage axis 2 action, connected to a varmint contour criterion barrel. I ordered a Boyds pro varmint for a bull barrel. This is my 3rd boyds stock and other than changing out action screws I have never had an issue. This is my first rifle however with an aftermarket barrel. I would assume since i ordered for a bull barrel I should have plenty of barrel clearance. Well, I do not. The barrel sits on the stock before the action goes down, and it still is not touching the recoil lug. I have emailed boyds and sent pictures but it takes them several days to reply. I was planning on eventually bedding the stock but now I am not sure if I should go through the trouble of modifying this one? I guess it is possible they sent the wrong stock.

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. I do not want to have to modify this thing. I have a milling machine and could take more out of the channel but I am not sure what all they have in there as far as frame etc. And it looks like i would have to mill out a lot.

Take pic of the barrel channel without the barrel.

Looks like it just needs to be sanded. Socket wrapped in some sand paper should make quick work of it.

i thought about that but it looks like it would kinda need a lot off. i have a pc of pvc that i could use and get it sanded pretty quick. Whats the finish like under the coating?

i will post a picture shortly

Take a pic from front showing the gap under the barrel. Might seem like a lot but it’s not usually too bad. I usually use a deep socket comparable to the OD of the barrel.

They are laminate. Kinda hard to explain but it doesn’t sacrifice integrity or anything. Any “rough” spots will be covered up by a barrel and can be covered up with a rattle can easy enough.

i started sanding a little but it is going to need it all the way down the side of the channel. its really no big deal i guess. It is just going to take some time. To me, it seems like it needs quite a bit to get even close to free floating.

Do a little at a time checking with a dollar bill as you go. You should be able to identify the problem areas pretty quickly.

Kinda tedious but nothing a couple hours and some patience won’t take care of. Don’t be afraid to remove the finish/some material... you’ll get it to where the barrel is free of any interference eventually.

Then at that point just blast it with paint/stain/whatever you feel like and you’ll wonder why you thought it was such a big deal in the first place.

i was going to have my gunsmith glass bed anyway, just not right now. so I took it to him and he said he will clear the channel and free float the barrel and glass bed everything. Its money I was not going to spend right away but he is not really charging me any extra to do it with all the bedding work....

I run emery cloth “shoeshine” style (smooth side to barrel of course) while straddling from above with the barreled action sitting in stock. Headless action screws (like used for bedding) and a bridge/nut to keep tension while shaping.
Works for me, and winds up better centered than when I’ve freehanded with sockets.
