Brand new to distance shooting - Bipod ?

Happen to have a link to that lever?

It's easy to want to skimp on accessories but bear this in mind. As you get better at shooting, and upgrade to a new rifle, you accessories will more than likely move with you.

But to answer your question, yes the CAL is worth it. You can usually find them here on the hide or the BT Blems if you are so inclined.

I have the standard legs and the Arca-Swiss adapter. On the AIAT the range of available height adjustments is great (i.e., low to high), and allows me to get comfortable in most situations. For me, that means less tension, better recoil management, and better follow-through.

I have been using a Harris BRMS for years, put on a pod lock & a ADM QD lever probably have around $200 into the bipod, like a lot of people I have been telling myself for a long time why would I spend $300 + on a bipod when I have a perfectly fine Harris. I just received a new Atlas CAL & put on a RRS BTC Pro clamp, all I can say is wow this bipod is sweet, there is no comparison between the two the Atlas is that much better, guess old habits die hard but if you are using a Harris or thinking about buying a bipod do yourself a favor & spend an extra hundred dollars & get an Atlas you will not be disappointed.

I went through the same thing

it makes it easier to pony up to a 500+$ bipod.

baby steps

Buy something quality like an Atlas Cal. Never skimp on accessories or else you end up with a few totes of things in the garage you'll never use again.

Baby steps indeed, there are a lot of really nice looking bipods out there now including the new blind pre order from Atlas, cant wait to see that one, hmm I do need another bipod for my other precision rifle, oh well need to start putting away some $$$ right now its going to be hard for me to beat the CAL.

I can’t decide if I order a CAL now or wait to see what this new bipod from Atlas is. They say there is a lot of hints out there but I’m not sure I’ve been in the right threads. Anyone have an idea?

they seem to be good at keeping a secret.

I’m hoping it’s a big boy wider CAL.
There was some mention a couple months ago that they had a product in development for ELR (a lot of people were using F class bipods for King of 2 Miles, but they were banned in this year’s rule update). If it’s that, I’d hope it would be more like the 5H where the axis of rotation is above the barrel, not just a scaled up CAL.

It would be easy to make a CALish bipod with a above barrel axis.
I guess we’ll find out in a few days.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but F-class bipods weren't outright banned. But most F-class bipods don't meet the new requirements by virtue of design.

I believe the rule that killed a lot of F-class and benchrest bipods is the new one that stipulates that bipods must be able to fold up, which eliminates use of bipods such as the Phoenix, Rempel, Mpod, etc. You can still use the LRA F-class bipod because it folds.

I'm guessing this is why Team AB and others are trying to snatch up any LRA F-class bipods.

Yep. Elite Iron is another one that’s very stable and still compliant. The other aspect of the banned bipods is that many of them allow for fine adjustment of height and sometimes lateral movement (e.g. Joy Pod), something no foldable bipod I’ve seen can do.

After my naive Harris bipod owning days, I switched over to an LRA Light Tactical. Night and day difference between the two. I also have the LRA Ultralight Scout bipod and it is just as effective on my .308 and my 6.5 RPR as the Light Tactical is. I can spot my own shots 600 yards and beyond on steel in real time with either one. The Ultralight is just a touch narrower, but my rifle bore centers are still within the triangle geometry of the legs. The one thing I like about the Ultralight is that the leg notches are in finer increments than the ones on the Light Tactical. For every 2 available leg notches on the Light Tactical, there are 3 on the Ultralight. The finer increments are nice to have once your rear bag packs in after a few shots and you need to lower the front of the rifle just a little bit.

Leg notches on the Atlas bipods are at noticeably coarser increments than either LRA. This may appeal to some as it may provide for a faster set up of achieving equal leg height for the crowd that is running and gunning against the clock. There's nothing particularly wrong with coarser leg height options, but it does fit a different purpose. Without a doubt, Atlas products are definitely top notch quality.

It is certainly good to have so many choices in good gear for every niche. Buy once and cry once.

I am interested in the Elite Iron bipod, it seems to bring a lot to the table but mostly the very low Center of bore. What are the negatives with it? Not including the price?

I've been shooting one for a number of months now. Have the ATLAS V8 and did have a 5H for a while. I use the V8 for my ARs and my Annie rimfire.

The EI has no real negatives other than its size. I shoot prone 90% of the time and I have found it to be so solid, it boggles my mind. It is light, strong and super stable. I own the Aluminum version with no panning feature. Not sure it would work for PRS match work as well but for prone, it is incredible. I use it for both of my AIs (AT and AXMC)

My body is old and PSR isn't for me. But I send a few hundred rounds a week down range at 1000 yds plus. After reading this thread I'm picking up a Atlas CAL. I have two rifles with Harris bipods. I'm thinking with the clamp I could get one Atlas and quickly switch between the two. Anybody else do that? Retirement income sucks.
Got the ADM leveraged rails on my Atlas PSR, CAL, and the Accu-Shot Monopods and they go on and off quick for rifle maintenance and I can exchange them among rifles, they cost a bit more with the rails but if you are on a budget it beats having to spring for another bipod, or monopod.

I’m using the Really Right Stuff BTC Pro clamp with my CAL Gen 2. It’s relatively inexpensive at $70 or so, fast to release, and clamps securely on either ARCA or Picatinny rails. One bipod for all my rifles is working well.
