PRS Talk Brass quantity?

I have 500. Some will get lost, etc. and most 2 day matches I bring about 275~ rounds including for zero day. I also don’t like to load last minute so I’ll have a 2 day match load ready a week or 2 prior and have enough extra brass to shoot a local or 2 at the same time. My locals I usually only need 100 rounds or less.

I have at least 600 rds per caliber. Seem to shoot a lot of 200 round, 2 day matches, it's good to be reloaded ahead.....also lose several!

300 is fine as long as you don't care about shooting some at 3x fired and some at 4x fired (if you track that). And then you go shoot a match where you lose 70/200 in a weekend and you're screwed for the rest of the season... If you can get 200 more of the same lot to match your 300 do it, they might last you two seasons then

I don't know how consistent Peterson Brass is lot to lot, but it may not be an issue if you cannot get the same one. All lots of Lapua brass have been within the same 2 grains in weight for 3 years - so i've stopped caring if they are same lot.

I do increments of 300. Most matches are 200-220 to shoot the match, so 300 gives me enough to shoot ~50 the weekend before to check everything, then 250 for the match to cover the match, zero range, data check, and a stage reshoot if needed. As I lose brass through the season, I can usually have enough left to do my prematch checks (and I might use older brass for general practice) and still have ~240-250 for the match. This season I went with 600 pieces to make for two match cycles and give me more room for brass losses.

I 'd be loading the entire batch as the same time to keep all my brass at the same firings, as well as accounting for losing brass at a match.

So 500 would be more than enough. I'll probably stay with Peterson since more money saved means more rounds down range.

But I'll be testing for the next barrel than. I figure I'll be using whatever I have left over on this barrel to develop a load for the new barrel. I'll let you guys know how lots vary year to year.

500. It’s enough to rotate two or three matches while keeping boxes of 50 at the same number of reloads.
I just can’t shoot brass with different numbers of reloads on it for a match...drives me up the wall

For my 308./223....Since premium brass has gotten ridiculously expensive lately I've been buying once fired Lake City or IVI brass by the thousands and then sort them into batches of 100 closest in weight.

For the cost of 300 new Lapua cases I can get 3000 once fired cases.

I anneal, resize and neck turn all of them and then weight sort.

Out of 3000 rounds I might get 6-7 lots within 1/10th grain and another 6-7 or so within 2/10ths... then it slides from there.

For PRS shooting where I've lost a large percentage of brass I've found this to be a good way to go.

Even if you don't have a NATO cartridge... If you have just about any popular production caliber it is usually possible to find 1x brass somewhere.

Just be sure to inspect carefully and ditch the junk without prejudice.

Relating to the OP’s question...

From someone who hasn’t shot ANY comps yet.... I realize the bigger the event, the higher likelihood that you can’t collect all of your brass, but how mush brass do you usually LOSE at a match?

10-20 pieces. most stages you can find all of em. occasionally you'll lose just one. then there is one stage where they eject into the crack of a rock and it’s impossible to find them all in a reasonably timely manner

At Meaford last year I made a suggestion that each squad would move through with their own squad assigned bucket for brass. That way the people who shot early in the relay would be free to move ahead to the next stage and collect their brass later. The last few shooters at each stage would collect the brass for everybody.

That worked out very well and helped the ROs keep us all moving and the competitors lost less brass. It was a win win for everybody.
