Re: Bridgeport Pics Good/Bad deal?

I would say it's a good deal, looks like you might have some tooling with it as well. If the DRO works then it's a steal! Make sure whoever moves it is experienced with heavy tools like this or you might be paying for a big repair.

Re: Bridgeport Pics Good/Bad deal?

I've worked a lot on machines like that. They're generally good to go. As long as someone hasn't been grinding or welding on the mill table. How do the gibs and ways look? That's where the real accuracy comes in. Check and see if there is any way lube in the oiler. If it has lube it has probably been taken care of. A lot of larger shops don't keep up the service too well and the oilers run dry.

A vari-speed head BP with tooling for $1650??!! Are you kiddin' me? Two words dude...BUY IT. I looked for a similar machine for two years in the NC SC market. All I could find was worn out junk for that much and more. Even if you have to have the ways scraped or a set of gibs installed its still a buy. Good find. SR

Looks like a KURT vise? can't tell from the pics...
price one of those online....

can you still see the scrape marks on the gibs?

as others said, buy it.....

Re: Bridgeport Pics Good/Bad deal?

If the ways are in good shape, it would be a good deal. Looks like you will need a power feed for the table. Also, a DRO for the quill would be good. I have a DRO like the one on that mill. It is as old as the hills but works ok. I am looking at replacement DRO, but it will be about $450 for a new one. Neither one of my mills are varible speed. That one being varible speed is really good if it works okay. That is something you might want to check out. The varible speed pulleys have more maintenace issues. Also, it looks like one of the head bolts is broken. But that is not hard to fix.

+100

Wish I could find a deal like that close to me....

Re: Bridgeport Pics Good/Bad deal?

looks like a compound vise.... Check the backlash and quill feed. If it is hooked up throw a 1/2" cutter in it and try to climb mill....you'll get a good feel how worn out it is. The DRO is older but save your coin for a power feed!

Damn sound advise!

Re: Bridgeport Pics Good/Bad deal?

A) To test mill spindle bearings, I put a .5000" pin gauge in a 1/2" R8 collet and measure the run out as I manually turn the spindle with a test indicator on a magnetic base, set on the mill table.

Then I push and pull radially as hard as I can on the pin gauge with my fingers while looking at the test indicator.

I want all the measurements to be less than .001".

B) If you take the quill out of a mill, be careful. It is heavy, the table is hard, and fingers are soft and sensitive.

Sage advice, and sounds like an experienced statement. Ouch.
