I have a Winchester Model 70 Laredo LRH, today I discovered that the safety would not engage so that I could disassemble the bolt for cleaning. Now it has been very tough to engage before so I thought a little leverage might help it this time...turns out it was just as dumb an idea as it sounds since I snapped off the safety knob.

I can order a new one from winchester but I need help in taking the old one off. I see what looks like a roll pin holding the safety in place. Do I just need to pop this out and replace the safety?

Re: Broken safety on model 70

My best guess is that my dad was storing it for me while I was a Ranger school and our hot water heater went out not far from the safe and there was a lot water under it. I can see rust around the where the firing pin assembly goes into the bolt which is why I want to take it apart. Im assuming that is a major part of the problem.

My win70 has been doing the same thing for a while. When I push the bolt forward while it is closed I can move the safety. I had a diffrent trigger put in it a while ago and I think it has something to do with the sear and the bolt contact not being enough. I'll have to look into it more when I get time to take it to a smith. It needs rebarreled so I don't shoot now anyway.
If it were me I would take your rifle to a good smith and have them replace the safety and fix the tight safety problem if possible.
