Recently after shooting my TRG-42 I realized that the pin that holds the retention clip and spring on my bipod at broken into 3 pieces. This is the lever that clips into place in the front of the stock. Has anyone else had this happen to them. It's under the factory warranty, so I'm not worried about getting it taken care of. I really dont want this to happen again. Does anyone have any dos or don'ts???

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

The same exact thing just happened to me. Not sure exactly what caused it, but I went to fastenal.com and ordered some replacement dowel pins. I measured the dimensions; 2.5mm diameter, about 1 inch long.

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

Must be bad pin.

After years of abuse and thousands of shots, pin has never failed me. Also know bunch of guys shooting big TRG:s, and I dont recall any of them mention about broken pin.

Early model pod spot weldings gave up instead, but they updated welding prosedure years ago.
Problem occured when pod was constantly used on plywood or similar surface where sharp claws were able to dig in and get (too) good grip. Recoil eventually snapped leg from welding spot edge.
Broke mine years after factory warranty, but they still gave me new one without charge.

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

well i got it fixed. as it turned out, the slender piece of metal that serves as the release tab couldn't pivot far enough to release. completely disassembled it last night till there was nothing left but the aluminum rail and the stuck bi-pod. got lucky and it squeezed out. the problem is the shim/or plate with the square cut into to hold the bipod in. it was too thick.BARELY. wont allow the rear of the release tab to pivot enough to release the bipod as well as catching this release tab near the pin on the way out. took some light sandpaper to it for an hour and half, and now it's perfect.only problem is, when i put gun back together, the magzine doesn't want to go back in all the time. sometimes it catches. i may post pictures of the tab after i sanded it if i get a chance.

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

when you put the gun back together you will notice that the two piece stock and action have some horizontal play before you tighten the bolts up. Try to center all the parts and tighten.
If you push the components to one extreme the mag will not always catch. The holes in the front stock are over sized and allow play before tighting.
I bought a used TRG22 and fought with it forever. But after dissembling it 50 times I found this to be the problem.
good luck
PS my 22 will not accurately shoot 175 or 168......only 155......weird

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

fixed my bipod with a 2.5x28 mm dowel pin. Was a bitch to hammer it in bc of the crimps at the ends of the hole

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

Finally got my bipod back from beretta/sako! When i opened the box that it was shipped in there was a note from a tech there asking me call in after i opened the box. I called and asked for this particular tech and after talking to him for a few minutes i think we figured out what happened.

In an attemp to get better accuracy out of the gun, by way of taking my shoulders influence out of the equation, i probably wasn't shouldering the rifle enough, had the bipod in the forward most position, and fired the rifle. With all of that recoil hitting the bipod first it basically sheared of the dowel.

The guy i talked to on the phone was really cool in telling me in a very nice way to stop holding the gun like a pu**y! His exact words were "you can't shoot this rifle like some 15lb .223 bench rest gun!" "You need more positive shoulder contact to keep this from happening again."

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

Bumping up an old thread here, my bipod just failed today after close to 200 rounds of 338 Lapua. I moved to a bench after the sun hit a position where it was in my eyes shooting prone, and I'm sure the recoil overwhelmed the pin with the extra bit on the plywood table. I definitely had my shoulder into the gun and it is disappointing that a mil spec system with the most expensive bipod in the world would have such a weak spot.

That said. this couldn't come at a worse time. I am set to take Gunsite's ELR class at the beginning of October, and I certainly don't have time to deal with a Beretta USA warranty claim. I contacted Eurooptic, where I purchased the rifle and bipod back in July, and I am hoping they can help.

Barring that, I will have to make the repair myself. I'm sure I must have lost the spring, so does anyone have any idea where I might be able to find a replacement?

Thanks,

-Bob

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

I've broken the bipod pin as well after only 900 rounds of 300WM. bm11, don't worry I was taken care of by the folks at Eurooptic and Beretta/Sako in a very efficient manner.

FWIW, I've always loaded the bipod and never shot it like a pussy.

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

Eurooptic informed me that their return/exchange program is good for 15 days on unused items only, but they would sell me a new one for $450 with free shipping. I called Beretta but got a machine and decided to fix the bipod myself.

I'll update as I go.

"Disappointing" - love the understatement

Can feel the pain.....

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

Well, thanks to the help of this forum, especially bth87 who PM'd me his phone number and shared with me the measurements of the spring and the pin, I am now up and running.

Being that I don't have an Ace or a Fastenal local, I had to get creative. I tried the spring out of a Glock Ny1 trigger spring and a pen, both with too great of a diameter before I found the perfect spring in the internals of a mechanical pencil. I canibalized a drill bit to make the pin.

That said, the pin was a tenth of a mm or so small, so if anyone has a source for the right sized dowel, it would be much appreciated if you could mail me one.

Shouldn't break either way and it seems to be a design/material flaw. I'm surprised that Sako/Beretta actually blamed the shooter for the failure because he holds his rifle lightly.

Abuse is different, but that bipod should be able to withstand a loose or tight hold without problem. Especially for $450.

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

The TRG bipod may very well be the weakest kit they build. I have heard this type of story related many times in the past couple of years.
bm11,
I am jealous. I was out at Gunsite for a pistol class in July and got a tour of the ELR range. You are going to have a lot of fun out there in October......July was hot!!!

I just got a call from a rep at Beretta to let me know that they are shipping me a bipod. I explained that I was all set because I already repaired mine, but he said he'd ship me one anyway to have as a spare, in case my repair wasn't up to spec.

I was going to bring a Harris with me just in case, but I'd much rather run a Sako.

Just wanted to say a public thanks for the huge gesture.

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

I must say that I am a big fan of Sako rifles but it shouldn't happen on a $400 bipod it never happened to me with Harris or Parker-Hale bipods that's what I think anyway

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

Yippee for Google!! I put Sako broken bipod and this site was the first to pop up. Forgive me for not having a fancy signature and avatar yet, just joined at 6:54am lol...
I just picked up a gently used TRG42 .338 and yesterday I was really embarrassed. I have only put 2 rounds through it and pulling it out to shoot it, I noticed the release lever laying separate from the bipod. I still shot it and the bipod didn't come out. I wouldn't normally have done that, but I had someone who really wanted to shoot it. All is well except now I need to get it fixed. I see the cost of a new one is $475 or so, can't believe something this costly seems to be a POS. Any suggestions would great. Being used with no paperwork for the bipod, I'm not sure what the manufacturer (looks like a Sako) will tell me. Any help would be appreciated. I'm a former Army Sniper, early 90's, so I had her in the pocket tight!!

Re: Broken Sako TRG bipod :-(

I have worked out a fix for those of us that can't get free replacement bipods from Sako!

I used a 3/32 roll, spring, or split pin. The catch had to be drilled out very slightly in order for the pin to move without binding. I used a 1911 plunger detent spring to replace the missing Sako spring. Everything works as it should, and I can't see the split pin breaking.
Total cost to fix was less than $5.00. Total time was about 10 mins.
