Midway has a one time deal on a VX3I 3.5-10x with CDS dials and wind plex reticle for $375. $75 over your budget but you’re getting a $500 optic for $75 more.
I had the exact scope on a custom 260 hunting rifle and it was a nice optic. Always tracked (granted I wasn’t spinning 30moa on it to hit at 1000) and the glass was excellent for the price. I smoked more than a couple groundhogs with it.

In that price range there's Burris, Athlon, Konus that would be good. Have you taken a look here for options?
I've been running fixed power SWFAs love the stink out of them.
I know they are good scopes and a great buy considering what you pay and the quality of them but a fixed power scope is not ideal for hunting whatsoever.
OK now you’re trying my patience let me break this down to you Barney style. I am only replying to the posters question on looking for a scope for a saddle gun or for coyote hunting. It sounds like you’re really wrapped around the axle about your SWFA scope, but I don’t really think that’s what the poster needs. I would have one on a dedicated long range rifle because I believe they are good scopes but I’m smart enough to put my emotions aside about something I may have bought myself to help somebody else find what’s right for them. In this case I don’t think a fixed 10x scope is right for what the man is looking for. You’re making assumptions based on emotion which is the least intelligent thing a person can do.

Gonna through this out there, it's a bit more scope than you're asking for, Euro Optics is closing out the 4-24x50 Vortex Strike Eagles for $299. I've got one on an AR, good FOV at 4x, illuminated reticle and plenty of zoom on top if you need more. The lifetime warranty would also be good for a saddle gun, you drop it and damage it they'll fix it.

Someone comes on here and asked for recommendations for a hunting optic for a lever gun that will ride in a saddle/ATV and people legitimately suggest fixed power target/tactical scopes and huge high magnification optics. Some people should have their keyboards taken away.

I have the 4-16 version on my walk around varminter, and because of it's unique features in this type of scope, I kept it on the rifle. I haven't found the need yet to replace it like I thought I would when I bought it originally as a stop gapper.
I use 4x for coyote hunting in areas where I can't see more than 50Y in thick junipers.
10x for holdovers, only 1.5 mils to 421Y at our turkey silhouette. 20-221AI/32's at 3735 fps.
16x/dial for little furry critters.
Very versatile small scope!

You are right. I was thinking this was a different thread. I lost sight of his original purpose. A little sarcastic but not emotional. I deleted it. Your advise was definitely sound.
Well opinions vary that's for sure. I suggested this for the OP b/c it kind of sounded like he was possibly in a similar scenario that I've been in on a cattle ranch out and about on a quad or utv. With shots that maybe present very quickly out in the open shooting offhand at movers. I struggled in the past with marrying useful eye relief and eye box across variable zoom ranges on offhand shooting at movers. With fixed I found that as long as I nailed that same cheek weld on a 'theres a hog' offhander I had a great view quickly and repeatably. If I'm sitting in a tree and watching it unfold slower it's different and I've got plenty of time to get set and possibly fiddle with mag. Variable may indeed be the better answer, but I thought I'd share what sounded like a similar search I was in recently and found a nice compromise.

A fixed 6x is fucking retarded on a lever gun unless it’s used solely in open prairie land or something, which I’m not sure why someone would want a lever gun for that.
An optic with tall and non capped or locking turrets that’s going to ride in a scabbard on a horse or ATV is also retarded.
I have what would be a "budget 3-9X" scope on my M40 replicas - budget all except they are anodized green and now rare.
They are Leupold copies of the old Redfield 3-9X. They don't really clone well the old scopes but they give you the flavor.
Anyway simple capped turret 3-9X with a mil dot reticle.
Ive got lots of pictures of my rifles with these 3-9X scopes in this thread....
The link takes you to the last page where I have been seeking out the magnification where I can "double" the potential of my reticle from 5 mils at 9X to 10 mils at magnification "X".
In my case I found its right around 4X.
So I have a simple tube scope with capped turrets that gives me 5 mils of capability at max mag and 10X at a pretty healthy 4X.
For bigger than MOA targets Im finding the utility great.
Plan on trying it out at some point this year to 1000 yards.
Capped turret Leupold/Redfield 3-9X, 40mm objective, 1 inch tube, mil reticle is an option......no messing with adjustments to disturb repeatability. Time will tell me if changing mag causes RT-0 shifts.
Probably get a Leupold next to nothing if you can get a discount.

My favorite and best scope is a 3 x 9 leupold vx-freedom. No kidding. Scope has CDS installed with windage reticle. Very clear too.
