Just watched Best Defense Survival and they demo'd the Diamondback Tactical® Escape & Evasion Bag. Anyone use it for their Bug Out Bag?

Suggestions on what to keep in it and where to store it?

They suggest in a gun safe in your survival room (maybe the master bedroom).

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

Here's a cheap option, next time you pick-up some dry cleaning, play with plastic around your head.

A "bug out bag" is the bag (or bags) that you have access to in case SHTF.

"survival bag", "bug-out bag", "G.O. bag (G.O. meaning GET OUT! haha). All the same.

Would have stuff in there that you might need to survive a couple weeks give or take.

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

I'd suggest just using a ruck. If a SHTF situation occurs where your on foot that's what you'll be able to carry for the longest amount of time with the most shit in it. If you plan on throwing the bag in the truck then use a duffle and have a ruck right next to it. And DON'T FORGET THE PORN. I think that some people believe that everyone that prepares for a situation like this is some kinda crazy. But a SHTF situation could be a natural disaster, or a terrorist attack. So perhaps some people might want to think about a bug out bag as insurance for when something that won't happen, happens to them. How many of the guys with food and water stored in the basement don't have a bug out bag? How many that think anyone that has a bug out bag is nut's has food and water stored in their basements?

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

For what it is worth....
I did a little research after the 2008 Shot Show. I was preparing an article on BOBs and noticed that during the time span between Feb. and June of that year, there were only two weeks where there was not a forced evacuation somewhere in the US. Fires, floods, hurricanes all kept people hopping that year.
Sniper Patrol Pack
My own choice for a BOB is linked above. I've found it perfect for my needs, but keep in mind that I know my limits. Too many will pack so much gear that they can't pick it up much less take a hike with it.

Bug out bag has several names and several meanings, the two main ones are:

Travel B.O.B.
It sits in the car at all times, or whatever vehicle you are in. Has just the essentials that will aid you in getting back to your house in case of "emergency" situations. Primarily has ammo, extra mags, clothes, bottle of water, flashlight, knife, blanket, etc...

Home B.O.B.
It is larger and more extensive carrying everything you need to be able to survive long term, especially if you have to make a run for it.

My survival room is in the west wing between the ballroom and the conservatory, directly across from the 'jungle-room'

Buy a few gallons of water, a five-pound bag each of rice and beans, a few flashlights, and make sure you've got plenty of board games. That should get you thru the worst disasters. Anything involving 3 or fewer of the apocalyptic horsemen and your local McDonalds will still be open as another option. And, if preparing for a zombie hoard is anything more than an offhand joke to you, ask your doctor for some meds too.

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

See, everyone makes fun of people who live in mobile homes, but they are just prepared, if an invading zombie hoard attacks they can just hook up up n leave. They don't have a bug out bag, they have a bug out home!

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

"As I began doing dayhikes and overnights..." I realized I needed a MERC SNIPER KIT BAG. – LOL, (Damn good review though!).

I agree with Mike. Take everything you need and want and squeeze it into a large ALICE pack. Leave your home and do not return for at least 6 months. Travel using only 1:50 maps and centerfolds pulled from National Geographic. Don't carry porn, borrow it from others. 2 decks of cards are a must. Keep all of the cards as you will need all of them to run a MO, big or small.

SHTF is nowhere near as bad as a PFOOTS (Poop Falls Out Of The Sky) scenario like in Red Dawn. For that I carry a short man, with a short barrel on a rifle that folds. I call that pack the FRANK (For Real Awful Nasty Killers ).

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

What is wrong with all of you? There are people all around you every day that are genuine experts on bugging out and you choose not to pay attention and learn.

The proper bug out bag is a shopping kart.

The proper way to protect you cash or stash is to duct tape it to your stomach or keister it.

You have been so advised.

Good luck

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

Since I am a good American (lazy and ignorant with a high credit card balance) I intend to panic and then merely commandeer.....

I have been perusing the Cadillac dealer's lot and the beer distributor stocks in hopeful anticipation.

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

I believe it prudent to be prepared, so even though I have food/water stored at the house, I still have a BOB with water/canteens/purifier, FAK, survival kit, Freeze-dried foods, cooking kit, radio, batteries, flashlights, camping axe, Glock field knife, 550 cord, deck of cards, etc., packed and ready to go if I need to GOOD.

The DOPPELDUFFER seemed to fit my needs, and has shoulder straps if you need to pack it.

Cheers,

Bill

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

I am just going to go to the Hamptons. All the rich will have plenty of food and water there and THEY will have gotten into their BOYS (Bug Out Yatchs)headed for the Bahamas.....

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

Monty Python = YES

I did a look through zombie.squad.we-are-kids.com today at work during a brief and we had some great fun. It would seem that their admins are about 15 years old.

It's a website for teenagers that cannot make the sports team and camp out using military-like gear where they can buy it.

Zombiesquad is a <span style="font-weight: bold">teenager website</span> for people considering going on an overnighter in their back yard with loaded back packs. I LOL'ed.

You would be over prepared in the Hamptons.

The notion that one is going to grab their magic bag and make it to the Free Zone is laughable, even if the chair is against the wall and John has a long mustache.

I don't have the time or energy to go into basic emergency management doctrine but I'll say this: Keep some extra food, water, gasoline, batteries, and ammo at your home. Take a class on first aid and/or basic response to emergency trauma. Combine that with a cool head and some basic self defense and weapons training. If you can't get it done with that, then the problem is much larger than anything you and the Wolverines are going to be able to handle on your own when you try to flee to the mountains.

</div></div>

A bag is a start for emergancy issues but I think the bug out bag idea came more from military operations then conus type Wolverines scenario where we would have to be much more mobil to avoid detection and evade and escape.

I have multiple bags,
a couple medical bags, IV, surgical kit etc
water filtration, purification
various crap all dedicated to survival
ammunition
plenty of firearms

I keep emergency kits in all my vehicles! Chemlights, first aid kits, firestarting kits, space blankets, tools, jumper cables etc..

You have a jump on me. I have been to 5 grocery stores today looking for the kart with the least perceptible wobble. I have made coded marks on the underside of the handle on three possible contenders - but the search goes on.

No back to 5/21/11 - you see it is ironic that you found that bus stop memo in Denver, b/c I will in Denver 5/21/11 as U2 is playing at Mile High Stadium that night. Will the bus run that night? Will Jesus be driving? Will I have enough tokens to get on HIS bus? Will I get to stay for the encore? Will the sanctimonious yet secular crooners be departing on my bus? If so - that's a bad sign - right?

Good luck

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

Those that travel and don't keep items in a Go bag to get home, or to a safe house, are living in a dream world.

Are the trucks or trains, passing your A/O only carrying Milk an Candy as well?

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

I have a great grocery cart now.

I made a zombiesquad flag for it too.

That zombiesquad website is for KIDS that were afraid to go out for the team. If you cannot tackle you cannot play. They cannot grow up, so they spend their time considering backpacks of gear that will allow them to meet with others like them over a can of vienna sausages and pork n beans in an overnight camp out behind their mom's house.

Internet silliness.

I looked at their website and quickly felt 14 years old.

This is my main idea of a bug out bag, not stuff to bug out to some location but rather an all around bag with some of the basic needs of survival. I keep a bag with me on my way to and from work in the event I needed to hoof it out on foot to get home I have the gear needed to get back home to the family. In just about all events there would be an obvious time table of when you needed to get your house in line and gear ready for an evac. If there was a dirty bomb blast then best to run towards it. If all of mankind was dead but a small few why would anyone want to be the small and few? I am obligated to do my best to protect my family and that is what I would do, make sure I have what is needed to keep them safe and fed for a given amount of time.

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

watched a few videos at zombiesquad.com... no need to knock on these kids. there 20-30yr olds that dont fit in that want to be cool. hell there making good if not more money than us selling there stupid zombie clothing line.

anyhow as gay as they look and sound (long hair and mustaches and shit) i would rather see these kiddos camping and pitching tents behind there moms back yard than at a obama rally or some left wing bs agenda protest.

but yea its very kiddish and stupid... looks like goth and emo got together to capitalize on zombies...

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

I have kept a bug-out bag in my Jeeps and 4x4's for as long as I can remember, and they never had a single round of ammunition in them. They were for if I broke down in the middle of nowhere and had to hike out, and depending on where I was wheeling, that decided what I packed. If I was in the middle of the Needles my BOB would be different than if I was Anza Borrego or Nothern Colorado. My buddy Bill Burke has gone in with a company to make them. If you really have use for one check out the web-site, if you are an end of the world, the zombies are coming, and never leave the couch, see previous post about playing with plastic bags over your head.

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

Oddly enough, the Mormons have been teaching people to have a 72 hour emergency kit for years now, as well as a years food and water storage. In South Eastern Idaho, when I was a kid, the Teton Dam broke. Lot a people had minutes to get the hell outta dodge! A lot of them were mormons. A lot of them did real well because of that. In a situation like that, even if you have the money for a motel and resterant, it doesn't mean there will be room for you. Everybody else is bugging out, too.

Re: Bug Out Bag suggestion?

Hard to beat the price and ergonomics of a kelty with external frame. Its not tacticool but theres a reason why 9 out of 10 hitch hikers prefer it. Put on some dirty clothes and everyone will just think you are homeless. Its like an urban guille.
