GAP told me the wait time is 12 months on their base rifle. I'm looking for other solid/reputable builders who may have a shorter build time. Thanks in advance..

If you can find the majority of parts yourself and them ship them to your builder that will probably cut down on the wait.

Call Short Action Customs, Spartan Rifles, or Jon Beanland.

Quit suggesting Jon Beanland. He's supposed to be top secret. All kidding aside, he's pretty quick and his rifles are said to be seriously accurate. I have a build going with him right now and he's super easy to work with.

You can always keep an eye out on the for sale forums here and save yourself a few hundred bucks. There's quite a few great builders on this site. You could easily find a reasonable 308 within the next month if you watch the forums closely. Then again, there's nothing like having a rifle built to your specs.

PM Sent.

One of the big factors to consider is how long it will take to accumulate all the parts. I know a very good 'smith who did a barreled action for one of his repeat customers over a weekend to make sure the guy had it in time for an upcoming competition. The time to deliver the parts from the various vendors is pushing a year though.

Re: Builders of custom 700s in .308

He could get a barrel from bugholes, I got my Surgeon from Brownells, my Surgeon DBM from whoever has it instock (easy to find), trigger fro
Brownells, and there is a brand new A5 stock for MTU barrel in the forsale secion. He could probably find most parts if he is willing to look and maybe "settle" for certain parts vs. Others. I got most of my stuff around the web, except for the stock. I had to order that cause I wanted a particular camo job.

Goodluck to you OP

+1 Ozzie can turn out a great rifle in no time if the parts are ready.

Yup - you can sure say that again. He just finished up a 7mm-08 for me - and even in my hands its frighteningly accurate. I hope to send another build to Jon as soon as i have the parts - heck of a nice guy also.

Re: Builders of custom 700s in .308

I had an action, stock, bottom metal, and barrel. GA quoted me 3 months to assemble. You may get it quicker if they are who you want to go with, by collecting parts yourself.

Re: Builders of custom 700s in .308

Lots of good suggestions here. But all of the smiths recommended are backed up right now too. It would be a wash as far as wait time unless you purchase an already built rifle. I've been waiting since early April for my barrel from Kreiger and my stock from McMillan. And it's an average of 3 months wait time once you send off your components to any of the smiths mentioned above. I know this because I've already spoken to all of them personally on the phone. So either accept the wait time and get what you really want in a custom build or purchase one already built that may or may not have the components you want.

I'd second American Precision Arms. Just saw one of their APRs on their site for sale. Might do what you want.
