Building 300 BLK bolt gun.Barrel questions?

I have a tac sps in 223 and like look and feel. My question l s can I have a barrel made 20" 1/8 twist bull vs skinny little 16" barrels being offered. This will be for hogs and oil kids to shoot plus they will have some power. Also am in process to file ATF. Paperwork for can so it will be fun gun. Barrel comments suggestions welcome

IMHO, this caliber does not require a fat barrel. 16" light varmint would be fine. If you plan on shooting alot of supersonic rounds then, the 20" would make sence, otherwise chop it at 16".

Just buy the 16" barrel the powder will burn in the 16" and you will be GTG also the barrels are very well priced and come chambered, and have the muzzle threaded for the money you cant pass them up they are even nitrided.

If you want a heavier barrel i believe they have both a light and heavy profile barrel available.

Also when you do the conversian remove the ejector from the barrel and replace the spring with a lighter one and file the notch in the ejector back further so the ejector can project further out of the boltface take the notch right to the back of the full diameter section this will helo you with the short cases to eject cleanly. i would also use AICS mags on them they can be fussy to feed through a rem factory 223 mag.

Also I was under impression that with a 223 bolt all I had to do is buy barrel let my smith true and square place barrel on and go shooting. No?? What am I missing?? Newbie here to this round

FYI, my reamer puts the 208 Amax at the lands at around 2.38" COAL, and I'm too tired to go measure the ID of a 223 BDL box, so you may need to modify the box or jump the bullets, or not...

The best luck I've had along this vein is with the 17fb actions. Losing the case from the grasp of the extractor every time you want to eject a round isnt much fun. I'd get that sorted out first.

Am I wasting time and money vs just buying that new Savage chambered in 300 BLK? Im a rem Guy and can't believe rem only has that little micro 7??? Why not make one just like aac-sd 308 in hogue ghille green???? They would fly off shelf

This^. I had a 300 whisper on a savage that would have this problem. I then played with the couple 223 700's I have and they did it too. I finally built a 300 BLK and used a 221 FB action and haven't had a single hiccup with losing the case upon extraction.

Not a waste of money, but you will have to do some tweaking to get a Remmy OR a Savage to feed and eject reliably. I am shooting a 300 FB built on a .17 FB Remmy 700 action and had to go to a DBM setup for relaible feeding and do the ejector mod mentioned above to get reliable ejection. Listen to AKA-Spook. He knows whereof he speaks on this (and not only this) subject. Best option of all is to just buy a Howa 1500 and have AKA-Spook rebarrel it for you. The Howa's are 100% reliable out of the box for feeding and ejection. I have had three bolt action 300 Whisper/FB (one CZ527, one HOWA 1500 and the Remmy I have now) and the Howa was by FAR the most reliable. No tweaking required. Just my 2 cents worth. Of course, YMMV.

I built my .300 Blackout 700 on a .17FB SPS Varmint action. Do yourself a favour and take the advice already mentioned. It is sage.

If you want to do this the most cost effective way, then I would consider the factory offerings as viable choices. If selecting between the Micro 7 or the Savage PC, I'd pick the Remington based on what your preceived needs are.

FWIW, I'm in the process of building a .300 Blackout SBR on a Howa 1500. Barrel length should be somewhere in the neighbourhood of 11"-12" when completed.

I was told savage 300 BLK was not on market yet. I guess ill have to wait to decide. Pics or 300 Blackout bolt guns would be nice to look at. Im sure your rifles would inspire many members!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the action isn't a lick of difference. Its the mag that is. Couldn't you just get a follower and box from a Fireball chambered rifle?

How is a .223 bolt and a .221 fireball bolt different? If that's the case, they wouldn't be advertising the only difference between a .300 BLK from a standard AR is the barrel. Last time I checked, the .221 Fireball and the .223 Rem had the SAME casehead.

The extractor is located differently.

The picture below shows a 221 Fireball boltface (Left) and a 223 (Middle). I put a red dot on the center of the extractor so you can see the relationship to the lugs and see how they are located differently. Also note the cut outs in the bolt faces as they help to direct the round during ejection. The 223 (Right) has an M-16 extractor and was thrown in so you can see how much nicer it is and it was right there so why not.

Viola, Einstein it is then. LOL. Austan is correct as the pics show. My .17 FB bolt face looks just like the .221 FB bolt face pictured above. Oh, and the "parent" case for the original (.300 Whisper) was the .221 Fireball not the .223 Remington.

If you stay with the Remington 700, you'll probably have to do some tweaking no matter which one you use (.221FB, .17FB or .223 Rem). The Howa 1500 in .223 Rem requires no fiddling to get it to run. Talk to AKA-Spook.

I have a recently rebarreled whisper on a 223 700 action. So far have maybe 100 rounds through it with only one instance of case rim falling out of bolt face. That was due to real slow bolt manipulation. Everything even close to moderate normal or fast has functioned great.

More than adequate for my purposes.

It is a shilen chrom-moly? blank turned to an approximate remington varmint contour at 16.25". Twist is 1:8. Was chambered by a Smith friend with a whisper reamer. Not exactly sure of reamer specs. Sent it to c.dixon to have it and a. 223 barrel threaded for my new tbac 30p-1.

Seeing a lot of promise with 125 speer tnt super and 208 amax sub.

I also have one of the NOE. 247 grain whisper molds but haven't cast any lead boolits yet.

Haven't been real impressed with subsonic terminal bullet performance on pigs yet. Shot at least 2 tonight. No recovery. Figured pencil in and out. Not sure about shot placement but heard the unmistakable thud of impacts. Distance was far and or pigs were walking/ running.

Shot 2 small pigs last week. Took finishing shots on them. Need to get better super loads worked . up. Might get better terminal performance.

As far as the feeding issues go... with my 700 in 300/221 it would work "OK" with a 17FB BDL but this was with subs only(all I tried). I put my barrled action in a extra AICS I eneded up with and used the 223 mags and I havent had a single problem since. Extraction has been great with a 17FB donor bolt and action. I am just now starting to work on loads with the 110Vmax. I run the 208Amax and 220SMK most of the time and a litte bit of the 240SMK.

I have TWO, I will try and get pics up tomorrow. Both on .223bf, still no problems. One is a Rock BBL in an HS Precision, the other is the AAC Medium Heavy contour in a McMillan Marksman. BDL Bottom Metal on both, if I could figure out a way to shorten my 20 round AICS mags then maybe I would do DBM. Otherwise I dont see the need.

I can point you to a great smith that has been building Whispers for years and you wont have any problems. Usually he uses Douglas or Hart bbls, but that is just what he keeps in stock on a regular basis.

I will admit if you had the choice of building it off a .17, or .221 then that would be perfect. Those are kept in stock probably by the same guy maverick got his from as well.

Id love to get the chance to set up at less than a hundred and take head shots but so far its been more spot and stalk close to dark with no time to make a creep.

Impacts are LOUD especially on a solid surface. Subsonic long distance also is a challenge due to rainbow trajectory.

I do plan to play at longer ranges out to 400 or so. Pffft...wait ...wait...wait...wait...wait...ding will be cool.

I rep mine is a Kelly Kyle 300/221. I have had mine out to 300 with subs and it is alot of fun with a can. It really is one of my favorite guns and I really like letting other people shoot it at the range and its smiles all around.

You should try <span style="color: #3333FF">THESE</span> bullets for subsonic hunting. The 220 gr lead tip spitzer version. Expansion down to as slow as 800 fps. I have some loaded up with 8.9 gr of N110 and they are accurate and quiet at 1030 fps. Have not shot anything with them yet, but hope to fix that before deer season ends. Many reports of good terminal effects on other forums. They are not cheap, but then again, you don't shoot that many of them. 100 ought to get you through load development and several deer seasons.

I have also strongly been considering a dedicated subsonic gun for hogs. 300 Whisper/300BLK/221/300 would all be fine for me but I am seeing some very big hogs that have taken some good hits from standard case guns and been able to get up. Not too sure how the 300 subsonic calibers would fare....

Problem is most of the bullets being used for sub loads will not expand. I use the 225 Hornaday match, it pencils through. There are a few bullet makers that have heavy expanding bullets, but they are very pricey. I'm hoping for a 240 grain v-max or something. You could always use heavy cast bullets, but they dirty up your can.

I have got the bug for the 300 AAC Blackout as well. I had an extra .223 Remmy action and after speaking with a couple people who own this or the Whisper, I had to make one.

I have the M5 Bottom Metal with the AI Mag and the bolt is a PT&G with a Sako extractor (placed about where the M16 goes) and the ejector is located the same as the pic above with the M16.

Hoping it ejects - any feed back with this setup would be helpful. The barrel and reamer should be here shortly. Can't wait to build - ought to be a lot of fun to shoot. Probably finish at 16.5 inches. I'll post up once she is finished.

Don't know of any .308 pistol bullets over 200 grains. There are several .308 rifle bullets over 200 grains, problem is they are not designed to expand at subsonic velocities. There is a bullet (Outlaw Bullets I think) that is designed to expand, but they are around $2 apiece. There is a 247 grain cast bullet that a lot of guys are using, but lead dirties up your can. Several of us have discussed the idea of a heavy plated hp with Berry's bullets, but so far no bullet. The owner said he did not have the tooling for such a large bullet, and it would cost around 10k. I think he would recover his money in a week. Anyone who likes the idea, feel free to go to their website and help me bombard them with the idea.

I have the bug too and now I am trying to absorb as much info as possible. I do plan on using this for dispatching animals so subsonic expansion is a must. Keep up the good work guys.

Scoop, my smith said he can't do a howa as far as threading and what not due to it is metric? Do you have anyone in particular you would use? I have rem spa 223 but saw a howa 223 for $300 and was going to opt for it but know this hurdle. Would like to do rem but don't think my smith is on same page as me

Yep, I tried it too. Some of the bullets still looked new after being fired.
