Hey guys,
Ive been reading a good bit before i decided to post so bear with me.

I traded some engine parts for a Savage Model 110 7mag. I didnt know much about it since all ive ever owned and shot was R700s. Come to find out the Savage is a pretty good gun.
Looking to rebarrel it in 300WM and have a semi low budget long range rifle.

Im having a hard time deciding on a barrel tho. So what do you guys think?

Just trying to plan it out before i start buying stuff.

Looking at a McMillan stock or a Choate stock, Countersniper 3-25x56, and the last peice of the puzzle.. the barrel.
Ill be purchasing a Suppressor for it also, so im thinking about the quick disconnect.
plan on shooting it out to 1500yds.

Thanks guys.

Re: Building a Savage 300WM

hum... Thats one thing i havent done much research on.. Shot a Barrett M99 .50bmg with one and it seemed nice. The guy didnt have it on there too long before he came out with us tho.

(Edit)
Big thanks on the counter sniper waste.)

Wish they had a high power variable scope tho.

Re: Building a Savage 300WM

Buy a pre-fitted Savage barrel chambered in whatever you like from Shilen(my vote for 6.5x55 with 140g JLKs or 284 Winchester in 180g Berger VLDs-need to change bolt head though) and change your barrels yourself. Put it in a Choate tactical stock- Voila!

Re: Building a Savage 300WM

Having spent hundreds of rounds behind a 7mmRM and a 300 WM in the Savage 110/111, I can say that they are both shooters out of the box. I have used barrels from Kreiger, Lilja, Rock Creek and others, and they are all shooters. My preference is the Kreiger, but not so much because it is better, but just because every time I call up there they really act like they want my business. In fact, they just got it again yesterday. As noted, Shilen does make the pre-fit barrels for the Savage. I don't own a Shilen, but have shot them and they are not bad at all. If you are planning to shoot out to 1500 yds, I would stay with the 300WM, but if you are going to spend more time at lesser ranges, I would think about the 7mmRM. With that 300WM at that distance, you are going to want to watch your bullet selection which means you need to select at least a 1 in 10" twist rate. Enjoy the Savage. I have come to enjoy them as much as my Remingtons.

For some reason i just want the 300WM

Ive been lookin for barrels and reviews, so far i havent found one negative aspect of the Shilen or Kreigers. So i gotta pick between the two now.

From what ive gathered i was plannin on goin with the 1:10twist and prolly a 210gr Berger VLD or something to that sort.. Whats the "limit" on a 1:10? 220gr or so?
Thanks guys!!

All thats left is learning how to shoot it

Re: Building a Savage 300WM

this is an awesome thread, im currently working on a 300wm savage i got from my lil brother for 75.00. its an ok inexpensive rifle. Let us know what decision you make and how it shoots.

Re: Building a Savage 300WM

since were talking savages and 1-10 barrels do you think a
Lapua Subsonic Bullets 30 Caliber (308 Diameter) 200 Grain Full Metal Jacket Boat Tail Box of 100, will knock an elk down fairly easily? as this is what im primarily going to do with this rifle, this and hunt coyotes, deer, and elk and thats it. i know its overkill for yotes, but the only hunting this rifle has ever seen have been coyotes at different contests me n my little brother have been to.

Re: Building a Savage 300WM

200gr bullet at ~1100fps is gonna have a little umph behind it, but i wouldnt be trying to shoot elk with it. you would have to put a perfect shot on it for a clean kill. But i wouldnt try it.

Re: Building a Savage 300WM

well you seem like you know more than myself on that subject, what grain would you reccomend on a 1-10 barrel for elk and for long distance? i know they only go to 200 on a factory load but i want something like you do thats gonna reach way out

Re: Building a Savage 300WM

The 1 in 10" twist will stabilize up to a 220 grain bullet. Beyond that is questionable. If you are going to shoot the 210 A Max, you will be fine with a 1 in 10.

Re: Building a Savage 300WM

Im still learning this stuff so i cant really help you all that much. thats why i became a member on this site to hopefully learn something from these guys.

Im gonna try a few different bullets. Including the Amax and the Berger VLDs.

Thanks for every ones help.

Still up in the air on the barrel, talked to a local gunsmith today and he said roughly 600 for the barrel installed and threaded for the muzzle brake so i can mount the can. shilen select match. 28"? i think he said.

Re: Building a Savage 300WM

look in the gunsmithing thread, i posted a DIY on changing a barrel. its super easy and cheap as well. barrel costs $300 from northland off savage shooters forum. install yourself and the threading you can get done for alot less than the $600 your smith quoted you. talk to wnroscoe or some of the other machinists on this site and i bet you that rebarrel wont run you $600.
