I'm hoping to build a tactical Remington 700 sps varmint that's capable of shooting pretty accurately at 750+ yards,i'll post the item im shooting for and then a link, i'm wanting to get:

the sps varmint action .308

lay it in either a bell and carlson a5 medalist or this choate ultimate sniper stock, this is what i want some advice on, the benifits of either/or.

then for a scope i'm also not that familiar with, i'm more of a handgun guy (been shooting allot with my father/friends) just getting into rifles i was looking at:

Ive shot the bell and carlson and it felt very comfortable to shoot but from what i can tell both the stocks will free float the barrel and if they will both put the rounds in the same place, i'de rather save the 250$ and invest in a nicer scope, unless of course the Chaote stock is complete poo, the the a5 it is

The gun will be a perfect place to start. I would go with the Bell & Carlson over a Choate, but that is just my opinion. If you don't want to spend that much, check out the non-adjustable version here http://www.stockysstocks.com/servlet/the-110/Bell-Carlson-tactical-2092/Detail. For a scope go with a 30mm tube which will give you more internal adjustment, something like this http://swfa.com:80/Vortex-6-24x50-Viper-PST-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P44559.aspx. It's more expensive than the one you linked, but I am not sure that one has enough vertical to get you out as far as you want. On that same note, get a 20moa base. Hope this helps.

i have a Remington 700 SPS AAC SD with the crappy hogue stock it came with and after shooting my buddies rifle (same model)with the B&C stock i can say its a very nice upgrade for the money. I plan on getting one myself sooner or later. i have this scope and love it:

I got it for $299 but its back up to $399 now. It seems to go on sale all the time tho. It's mil mil and made in japan, also is a midway exclusive so you wont find it anywhere else. The glass on the weaver is nicer then the glass on my bushnell 3200 elite too. If you wanna spend more on a scope then take a look at SWFA SS stuff, pretty sure they have a mil mil scope for around 600 bux. I think you would be very happy with the weaver tho.

I'm also kinda new to precision/long range shooting myself and this is my first .308. I put a 20 MOA base on it and had it bedded properly which seems to be normal for alot of Remington 700's from what I have been told. You'll need a decent bipod too, i just bought a Harris SBRM 6-9, didnt wanna cheap out. Good luck and enjoy your rifle.

I have an ultimate sniper - I guess it's an okay stock. It takes getting used to. It seems solid and it's heavy. In hindsight I probably wouldn't get it again.

I have a few B&C's - I really like them. Good stock for the money.

Re: Building a tactical remington 700 help?

Welcome to the wonderful world of long range precision shooting.

I bought a B&C stock, the non adjustable version. It was on sale for 200 bucks. You can't beat that for a fully aluminum bedded stock. You can always add an adjustable cheek piece later for much cheaper and the overall rifle will be a lot lighter.

As far as optics go. If you don't have a ton of cash I'd look into nikon they make a great scope for little money. Full lifetime warranty and can be had local or on ebay for dirt cheap.
