So i'm looking into building a target rifle based on the r700 action that is capable of 1000 yard shots. I've never built a rifle from scratch before so i'm pretty noobish on the topic. Any tips/recommendations on choice of stock, barrel, etc. would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Building a Target Rifle

Yeah, complete your profile, use the search engine, and you probably should have posted this in the bolt rifle forum...sorry boltripper

This is probably the most frequent question asked, so it should be very easy to find.

The OP might want to rethink his nickname here if he's never been <span style="font-style: italic">in the business,</span> so to speak.

Re: Building a Target Rifle

I was going to post the motivational picture of someone getting his head slammed into the keyboard, with the words, THE SEARCH BUTTON FUCKING USE IT, but my google fu is weak.... So yall will just have to imagine that I posted it...

Re: Building a Target Rifle

thank you all...although, i have read many forum threads on the subject and have found lots of false and/or variable info. There are a few things that are still unclear to me such as; barrel choice (what companies are good values and very capable of accuracy), stock choice (is aics really worth the price difference from a mcmillan), and what would be the best weight for my trigger for shooting long range target (there is too much variability in what people recommend). I wasn't specific enough in my original post aswell; im intending on building a .308 rifle based on the remington 700 action for long range target use. I have lots of experience target shooting with the .308, and lots of experience hunting with it. I'm looking to spend somewhere around $2000 on the gun minus the scope.

If you dont have the answers, how do you recognize "false" info????

"You say you want to build a rifle and you leave that hangin in the air like I am gonna fill in the blanks for you...."

OK OK before another person accuses me of being a dick I will clarify and quantify.
You say you want to build a rifle on a Rem.700. You say you want to shoot it 1000yds. At this point you will begiven every answer under the sun and to be honest much like the video I gave you to watch people will simply be telling you who they are. Let me tell you who I am. I own and have owned 4 custome guns in my life...so far. The first was a 1000yd BR rifle chambered in 30BooBoo. The next was a custom 6BR XP100 pistol that I have used for IHMSA competition, the next a 223 custom XP100 pistol that I use in IHMSA competition, and lastly and most recently a model 700 tactical rifle built by Apache Machine and Custom, chambered in 30-06. These guns were made for ME. I look at a once in a lifetime gun as something that should reflect a bit of who I am. Not to the point of being impractical but I am making this to order. Use the search function. Look at what others are using, look at others opinions of such parts and pieces and make one that is your own.

Re: Building a Target Rifle

i don't know why i have to be given such a hard time...i'm just trying to get some instruction on good reliable barrel manufacturers, stock choice, trigger weight and so on...what are you guy's preferences in those areas? (for the record, upon the completion of this rifle, im attending a long range shooting course)

Re: Building a Target Rifle

You're given such a hard time because every answer to your questions can be easily found.

However, it doesn't appear you are willing to look. You've read various threads and found false and variable info? How do you know it's false?
All your going to find is "variable" info because it's not black and white; it's varying shades of grey. So if you have money burning a hole in your pocket, call GAP and order a Crusader. If you're on a budget, get a Savage or Remington with a scope in the $600-$1000 range, buy a crap load of match ammo and learn how to shoot.

We are here to help, we are not here to spoon feed you. All the answers are here and easily obtainable with the Google search engine and about 15 minutes of time. Oh, and some initiative.

Now...begin.

Re: Building a Target Rifle

Stocks:
Manners Mcmillan, HS Precision

Barrels: Shilen, Krieger, Obermeyer(good luck getting one),Bartlein, Lilja, Hart and maybe some other high ends I cant think of right now.

Triggers: Rifle Basix, Jewell Both in the 1-3 lb range unless you are bench shooting than I would go 3-8 ounce.

You are being given a hard time because thsi information exists in spades on this forum already all you have to do is look but you want to be spoon fed. I have spoon fed you now if you don't like the info which I suspect is what is next we can talk further.

Re: Building a Target Rifle

You are being given such a hard time, because you want the answer feed to you, not to look for it yourself. All of these answers have been asked time after time after time, until it hurts to even see a mcm vs aics or jewell vs timmeny, hart vs krieger thread.

You have been told to use the search, and come back with the response that you have, their is just to much mis information, or it hasnt been gone into enough. I call bullshit. If you knew enough to tell bullshit from truth you wouldnt have asked the damned question in the first place. Its been gone over so much, that one could puke having to read another thread of generalities, just like what you have started.

Re: Building a Target Rifle

Polite suggestion:

Starting out at 1000yds is optimistic.

If you have never owned nor handled a quality precision rifle(GAP KMW, Newman, etc.), you might want to start a bit lower on the food chain.

Try a good factory offering like a Remington 5R in .308, or even one of their HS Precision stocked varminters or a Sendero. Figure out what you like/don't like. Handle some custom rifles and decide what works for you. Shoot the barrel out of the factory rifle and then send it off a custom build. When you call a custom builder, you will have "your own opinions" and not those of others that have no idea what your personal tastes are.

Re: Building a Target Rifle

Not sure what you mean by target rifle. If its strictly for punching paper at 1K yards then do a search for 1000yard bench rest matches and look at their equipment list. Same for F class long range. Take it from my experiences, jumping into 1000 yard target shooting will teach you how to come up with some good hand loads but you will not learn how to use a rifle. Lots of ammo, classes, and tactical matches will help with that, so budget for it.

Re: Building a Target Rifle

Hey so I still don't get it. Should I use the search function?! Haha

This thread is like a 16 year old who has his learners permit asking about racing in.. (insert top tier racing circuits). You need to maybe go out to your local range and talk to people... maybe search around on here a bit. Like mentioned above there are about 50k threads that might be able to help!

Although I wish you luck! 300WSM all the way ;-)

Oh yea and the initial 2k is the easy part the price of AMMO for getting accurate 1k gets pricey!
