Building the "budget" PRS Gun - Advice wanted

Hey guys, after shooting my rifle, my brother really wants to get something similar but needs to be a lot more budget friendly. I know there are a lot of ways to go about it but this is what I was thinking. Please let me know if you see any potential issues. The idea is to build something that comes in under $2000 but as you go things start to add up. with the options listed below he should get a full rifle for about the cost of a custom action. Sure he can always add on more stuff as he gets into the sport.

So with the options below its looking like ~$1575 but thats a full rifle, brand new and not a bunch of trashy parts. Alternative is to buy used and hope things go well.

Missing a trigger, missing a brake. Also need a go gauge and some sort of action wrench and barrel vise.

Lots of cost/investment in tools for someone just getting into the sport who may or may not use them more than once.

For the price of bottom metal and stock maybe a chassis like an XLR element or envy or KRG.
Beddiing not an issue then.

Right now $574 for the stock and bottom metal w this option so not too bad.

Yeah better trigger is in the realm of "upgrades" for sure. Odds are he will get one right away. Hoping to run out first comp together early next year.

If you're willing to wait the new KRG bravo chassis for 350$ would save some money for DBM and bedding for that matter that could go towards a nice trigger.

You're at $1500 and don't even have a scope, bipod, and a couple of bags.

Get a Howa HCR or Ruger RPR in 6.5 Creed, an SWFA scope and an Atlas V8 and be done.

^^ I'm with this guy. If I wasn't a left handed shooter and was looking to get into shooting, the RPR would be where I'd throw my money. Out of the box it will shoot spectacular. Down the road you can change the grip, stock, forend, etc and modify to your liking. Get a quality SWFA scope that is durable and tracks well.

Also, take a look in the PX for used options. Trued Rem 700 barreled actions can be had for under $1000. Then you could throw it into a Grayboe stock or the new KRG Bravo chassis. There are a lot of options.

The Bravo would be nice if it was out. There will be a rush on them in two weeks......

A KRG X-ray is not much more than the Bravo (+200) and you don't need to put up with bedding, bottom metals, and the lack of adjustability of the Grayboe or any other conventional stock.

You are at 1700 (at least) by the time shipping is added.
It IS a good mix of components though.
There are certainly more budget friendly ways to get into the sport and those have been mentioned already.

Heck, for that kind of money, just get a Tikka TAC-1 in 6.5 creed or a Tikka TSR-1 in .260 for right about $1800. Ready to throw a scope on and shoot a match with.

Much better action and trigger than the PTG Rem and will definite shoot. I have both the PTG and a Tikka so I know.

Years ago, I bought a used M700 factory barreled action in 260, with Jewel trigger, for $475, then found a used HS precision stock M700 inlet with Badger bottom metal for $300. Glass bedded it, shot some 3/4" groups at 100Y and sold it for a $200+ profit. Just saying...

Then charged a gunsmiths personal rifle with low round count on the CC. Also a M700 custom which had everything done to it. It'd cost someone $3500 to have that same rifle built new, I bought it for $1900. After 4 barrels in 6 years time I sold it to a friend for $1800, still shoots awesome.

That's the tricky way of going about this.

What's the benefit of that over an $800 Tikka CTR with a chasis added? You don't need a better trigger, better barrel, DBM, etc.

Ruger American ranch, Magpul stock and dbm.

Potentially don't need to rebarrel but if you want to you can use a PVA prefit. If I'm not mistaken Tikka t3 prefits from criterion would work also. Triggers are better than factory Remington and you can replace as wanted too. Scope rail comes with.

When you include the scope you will be over your targeted cost. Best bet would be to get a factory rifle (that have been mentioned) or finding a good deal on a used rifle. I have a safe full of rifles that I learned that a budget rifle is always hard to build. It is going to cost you at some point.

I am getting the savage 12fv in 6.5 through cableas - ($320 after rebate, free with points) includes accutrigger and heavy barrel. Putting it in an MDT ESS Chassis ($900 - personal preference here, there are cheaper options) topping with an Athlon Helos 6-24x ffp ($570) - Total - $1790 scope and all.

That will likely be a good shooter. My experience, however, is that Savage heavy barrels are...well, heavy. Trick is to find a way to make sure that your finished rifle is balanced. Even a heavy rifle is easier to handle if the balance point is in the right place. Personal opinion. I have added weight to a stock for better balance before and it makes the rifle much more comfortable and shootable.

Dude like others have said, don't even waste time building something. Go with either a Howa HCR, Tikka, or Ruger Precision.
