ive been working on a 358bfg for some time and im almost there.

specs

trued win 70 wssm action

#5 shilen select match barrel 26inch with 11 degree crown

mcm stock

factory trigger tuned to just over 2lbs

20moa base (came with the gun will be replaced)

swarovski z5 3.5-18x44 ballistic turret (on order)

i had to sand out most of the old bedding to make room for the heavier contour stock. hind sight being 20-20 i probably should bave gone with a #4 contour. as it sits it in pics wieghs 10.5lbs. with the swarovski finial weight will be about 11.5 lbs

the 20moa base is what came with the rifle i bought (25wssm) i think ill need to replace it with a 0moa base to get the scope a little lower for proper cheak weld. i think with a new base and possibably a stock pack it sould line up well

here are some pics im still trying to decide on weather or not to add a muzzle brake. a break would be great for the range when im wearing hearing protection but horrible for the woods when im not.

i will say this was my first bolt action build that i did not hired done and it was a great experiance.

now on to paint. im thinking ill do a sandy collor stock with a black breakup pattern and green barreled action

liberty is just south of richmond indiana.

im trying to learn machining (as a hobby) there is a local machinest who helped/did the machining. i bought the components of this rifle as a learning tool. the assembably, triggerwork, barrel channel is really all i did on my own.

Re: built myself a new indiana legal deer rifle 358bfg

there are 3 basic variations of the 358 for indiana deer hunting.

358 idc
358 wssm
358 bfg

the 358 bfg is the fastest. its been reported to do 2800 with a 180 gr bullet but i think that will be pushing it pretty hard. i lbe happy with 2650-2700

Re: built myself a new indiana legal deer rifle 358bfg

I've got a WSSM Coyote sitting here destined for a build similar to yours.

Why go with such a long barrel? I'm thinking 20" or 22" would be optimum.

What twist did you choose and what bullet did you have in mind?

IIRC it's a maximum case length of 1.625" and a minumum bullet diameter of .357".

There is a pending amendment to lengthen the case maximum to 1.8".

Training wheels, someone on here will hopefully give you a better answer. But due to large numbers of hunters and flat ground, IN and OH both limit rifles capable of high velocity and very long range. I think IN limits case length to 1.625" and caliber to a minimum of .357. OH allows handguns, but (I think) they are limited to straight wall cases, minimum .35 caliber and at least a 5" barrel.

i went with the long barrel because i didn't know what barrel length i would want until i messed with a complete rifle. i figure its easier to cut some off than it is to weld some on

i chose 14 twist. im going to try the 180gr bullets first but have a feeling ill end up with the 200gr hornadys. the only bad thing about the 35 cal is there aren't any real high bc bullets. but for 300-350 yds i dont need real high bc.

i hunt alot of open areas and the furthest shot i can take from my current stands is 400

there is no mention of being limited to a straight wall case. but the rest of your info is spot on. there are alot of folks using the 458 socom.

basically they opened up pistol calibers for use in rifles. they did not list what salibers are allowed but listed specs.

Re: built myself a new indiana legal deer rifle 358bfg

Great work, vette. If I were still in Indiana, I'd be looking to head to the range and see how it shoots. I love the state, but man, I hate those deer hunting regs. Now make sure you give us the range report.

Re: built myself a new indiana legal deer rifle 358bfg

Please excuse my ignorance but why would you want to limit the max lenght? This seems pretty counter productive to me. Wouldn't you want to use some knockdown, energy, Taylor or some such formula?

Re: built myself a new indiana legal deer rifle 358bfg

They want to limit the range of the projectile with those hundreds of thousands of hunters hunting on flat land.
That is ONE scary thought of all those guys that only handle a gun one week out of the year blasting away with long range rifles.

Edit: Ohio for the deer gun season limits hunters to shotguns with rifled slugs, muzzle loaders, and handguns - and the handguns have limitations.

Re: built myself a new indiana legal deer rifle 358bfg

i really dont have a issue with the not allowing high power rifles in indiana. i know alot of people do have problems with it. some times i can see 9 orange hats from my deer stand on our farm. the niebor allows tons of hunters and i am glad they cant have highpowered rifles.

the intruduction of these wildcats like the 358bfg has drawn some consern from alot of folks. these wildcats REQUIRE reloading and pratice so its not like somone can go to walmart the night before season and say "i want to hunt give me a gun and ammo"

With some 225 or 250 grain partitions that thing will hammer the bears. Not that the 180s won't do the job, however.
