Bulk Ammo in .308 -- Price / Accuracy

What are some recommendations for bulk ammo purchases which could be considered to be more consistent than other bulk/surplus ammo in .308? Alternative question could be what ammo are GAP-10 owners seeing their rifles prefer for consistent tight groupings?

I did some searches and reading before posting in case the answer was readily apparent - and maybe it is out there already, but I didn't locate it with my keywords.

2013 was the year of investing in serial numbers here in CT before the laws eliminated the right to bear them.
2014 will be the year I return to the range after several years away due to shoulder injuries from a car accident.
2015 will be the year of investing in reloading across the spectrum.

I'm not long-range experienced (100-300yds at local ranges or clubs mostly) but will be taking delivery on a GAP-10 upper in the next few months and intend to work up to longer ranges in time. My girlfriend (she's a keeper) surprised me with some SW boxes of 174gr SMK which I'll hold onto until I can make proper use of it. For now, getting back into practice is a sufficient goal and if there is such a thing as relatively consistent bulk ammo I think that's a fair place to start. I am open to what wisdom can be bestowed here.

For reference to those running GAP-10 rigs, I'll be running a 22" barrel with surefire brake. I'd likely change that since I'm told CT now disallows use of cans, but can't change the order now anyway.

Having grown up on the range, I can't wait to earn my way back to the bull.

A couple years ago I got a good deal on 1000 rounds of DAG 147G NATO that has surprised me with its accuracy. Granted I shoot it out of an OBR more than other rifles I have, it is generally solid 2 MOA or slightly less at 100 yards. The best it shot was 1.2 MOA at 100 yards for I believe 10 rounds. It was with an 18" OBR, from prone using S&B 5-25 H-59, Bobro one-piece, and Atlas bipod.

As far as GAP-10 ammo, you might want to check with Copper Creek Ammo as they have a load worked up specifically for a GAP-10 with 18" barrel.

I shoot my Gap10 alot and I shoot only match ammo. I highly recommend the Copper Creek Gas Gun Load. I also shoot Federal FGMM 175gr. match. Both will shoot super nice tight groups in the Gap 10 if you do your part. If you can't hold less than an inch with either of these at 100 yards then ya need more practice. I have shot many 3/4" groups and a few .5" groups and I'm not the best shot in the world. I believe the Gap-10 with a really good riflemen driving the gun can shoot one ragged hole groups at 100 yards. I'm not that good yet, but working on it. Don't feed this gun shit ammo, it deserves better. Congratulations on a bad-ass rifle, I love mine.

If you are looking for inexpensive blasters, I shoot quite a bit of Federal XM80CS. It is 149gr FMJ, usually available at Walmart, Scheels, or Cabelas. It runs from $380-400 for a case of 500. My SR25 and LR308 16" will group it into 2-2.25...the M1A hates it though (4"+). Good enough for me to bang steel at 300 (furthest my range has steel). The brass is pretty decent and survives plenty of reloads as long as it never finds its way into the FAL.

For just stocking up and plinking, I can't find anything cheaper locally that is reloadable. If I'm not shooting groups, or stretching it beyond 300 then its fine.

Look at freedom munitions. I buy 150 gr fmj for $12 a box and 168 amax for $17 per box. But I also reload it.....which is by far the cheapest.

Some good recommendations, and at least one PM on the topic. Thanks, guys. For my purposes I though some clean common quality rounds would get me back into practice. Squeeze, breathing, hell with my eyes now I'll probably have scope issues to relearn as well. I read up on the AMAX rounds through SW and those sound sweet. I want to feel worthy of the gun before I start feeding the high-dollar pieces into it. I'll probably also want to try a few different round weights to see what it likes to eat first, too.

Problem tipper, is the trade off with time.

I don't want to spend hours reloading ammo for a semi auto that's going to trash my case and be used for 100 yard off hand drills or off hand hunting in bush.

Special bolt rifle? Sure. Good semi? Sure. Long distance? Sure.

Tactical drills at 50 meters? Nope, certainly not worth my time.

I've heard that the Lithuanian GGG ball ammo is "near match grade" - but have not tried it out. $0.80 a round is pricey - but if it is better than ball, which is $0.50, but not quite up to FGMM at $1.50 a round, I'd work with it to re-develop trigger skills...
