I have a question about bullet lube and the other thread about cleaning touched on it, rather than hi-jack that thread......I have read in some competitions any type of lubrication of .22 rimfire is illegal and considered cheating. On the other hand, after a long search and what was available and trying to be competetive, my rifle shoots Wolf Match Target pretty well. This stuff is among the greasiest or most slippery factory stuff I have ever used and is hard to get in a magazine. It doesn't appear to be particularly dirty for me, but it will blacken my fingers. I have tried others by Eley, Rem Target, RWS and Norma tac - which isn't bad stuff if you can find it. None is as greasy as the wolf.

If I use/fire another brand load, it will take me a couple rounds to bring the group back into focus as it opens slightly. From what I can learn, there are two types of lube, wax base and grease (oil) base.

Some brands of .22 are particularly dry, would they benefit from some type of exterior lubing?

what would one one use to lube ammo, why is it illegal?

yeah you'll benefit from lube, i've tried many different things from car wax, to bow string wax, to pam cooking spray, to allox bullet lube, to crayon, to 2 cycle oil, to transmission fluid, and other things. best stuff i've found so far and ease of application is high temp silicon grease.

from what i can gather, it make a better gas seal than just plain bullets.

it doesn't turn crap ammo into match grade ammo, but it does help. especially when coupled by weight sorting.

some competitions call it illegal as you have to use factory manufactured unaltered ammunition. such as silhouette shooting.

I do not know what Wolf uses but it is the same as the SK and Lapua lube as they are all Mfg in the same factory. But, the Wolf lube is only greasy above about 45-50 deg F. Below those temps, it is hard like varnish. And at cold temps it does not group as well. The Eley lube seems to remain soft at lower temps for what that is worth. Each Mfg has their own blend of snake oil and bees wax to make up their bullet lube. All I know is that some santioning bodies do not allow you to add your own lube to the outside. Stuff like spray on teflon or Dry slide lubes or moly come to mind. They may or may not help but are still illegal.
