I am setting up a barrel for my dad's Thompson Center Encore rifle. It is a 1 in 10 twist .308. I realize this is a pretty fast twist for a 308. What do you think a good bullet weight would be? I will be handloading for him, and he prefers non toxic bullets Barnes, Hornady GMX, etc but open to anything if accuracy is decent. Thanks for any insight-MSD

Re: bullet weight for 1 in 10 .308?

He's leaving the bullet selection and load development to me. I have some Nosler BT's in 180gr, Hornady interlock 165 btsp, smk's in 168 and 175, and Speer target match 168's. The 10 twist barrel should do the job? Obviously, this isn't a match grade bolt gun, but I'm hoping for around 1-1 1/2moa to 300 yards. This will be for hunting whitetails, and some paper punching.

Do not overlook 150 grain bullets. You may be surprised that your dad's rifle likes them better than the heavies.

Just because you have a fast twist does NOT mean that your rifle will shoot better with longer bullets. Accuracy depends on many more factors than just twist.

I will try some 150's as well. Both of us prefer the heavier bullets, so I'm hoping the barrel shoots them well. Any reccomendations in the 150gr range?

If you are wanting to meet his desire of gas bullets (lead free) then try the TSX's at 150, or the GMX's. I like them both, and have shot a lot of the TSX's at 150 in a 1/10 twist with superb accuracy. Haven't tried a lot of the GMX's, but the 40 or so I've run down the tube did well, but not quite as tight as the TSX's, I probably needed to get the GMX's seated out a bit, I've got the TSX's 60 thou off the lands to shoot well, and boy do the shoot. Win 748 near max charges, hell on whitetails, and beat down quite a few large (300lb plus) hogs as well!

Sounds good. I like the Barnes bullets for hunting. I used the 230gr in my 375 H&H this year for whitetails and damn- they just got pounded to the ground. I will try the tsx in 150gr. Is it true that the Barnes like a jump to the lands?

so he is hunting with it?
I would think he wants the most "toxic" bullet he can get

FYI, this whole lead "issue" is BS. In VERY few situations there is an issue with lead in the enviroment. Under specific conditions, in certain areas. Time for people to start getting an edumacation on the subject.

If your not stuck on the non-toxic; the sierra Game King BTHP is a great deer getter and flies like a Match King. 'Nough said? As far as weight; my 1 in 10 twists love the 150-155gr bullets and the extra velocity is a plus in the open.

I agree, very little issue with environmental damage. My folks are really health concious and prefer not taking any chances with lead in their meat. I personally don't give a -, I just like what shoots most accurately. Shoot em through the lungs, and the lead just keeps on going anyways. I will try some around the 150 gr range. Reading about the Berger and Lapua 155's, I may have to try those too. Seems the consensus is the 1 in 10 twists like the lighter bullets better.
