Bullet weights in 1/8 twist

Hey everyone, my brother has a stag varmintor. 1/8 twist. These are the 24" bull barrels that weight a ton. I'm trying to find him some ammo to use to go yote hunting. I found some blackhills 36gr, For a fairly reasonable price. He usually shoots 55gr hornady vmax, and the gun is incredibly accuracte. Unfortunatly finding hornady right now is a pipedream. I know no one her will be able to tell me if it'll shoot sub MOA, I just want,to make sure these will stabilize well with that twist. Thanks!

I've used hand loaded 36gr in my 26" WOA with 1/8 twist and they shot ok at 200 yards...

I think you would be GTG with anything 75gr and less with 1:8

There is probably a lower limit for a 1:8, might have something to do with RPM.

I had an old stag model 6 10 years ago or so. It shot 77gr really well and had no issues out to 500yards. At the time I didn’t have access to a range any further but it was a laser, it felt like it weighed about 100lbs but it was a 100lb laser

I have a Savage with a 1/9 twist. It shoots any thing from 40 to 65 gr with no problem.

I've shot 30gr VG out of a 6.5 twist Valkyrie(4300fps) at close to 1/2MOA, a 1:8 will shoot anything up to 80gr. I have a few friends at higher elevations shooting the new 85gr Berger out of 7.7 twist barrels. The lightweight Bergers had problems coming apart but that was over 20 years ago, the only bullet I have had come apart in the last 15years was the 75gr Amax but that was because of the plastic tips and Hornady fixed that with the ELD.

In general, over stabilizing is better than under stabilizing, to a point. Spinning a bullet too fast won't degrade accuracy as much as spinning it too slowly, so you should be safe. The concern with overstabilizing would be that the high RPM could cause the jacket to separate from the bullet mid-flight, but I think that's unlikely with a 36gr at .223 velocities, even with the long barrel. It's definitely safe to shoot (at least for you guys, not so much for the coyotes), so it could be a good test to try out for the good of the community.

My only experience is with Atlanta Arms factory ammo. I have a JP 1/8 that won't shoot anything less than 77gr, even going to 75 doubles the group size or more. The 77 is plug n play though easily getting me <.75 MOA.

My Dasan 1/9 handles 55 to 77 nicely.

Atlanta Arms is bit slower than most which I believe is the main factor here.

my experience has been with 60-77gr projectiles in my 223 1/8 twist. i have shot 55gr and they worked well too. shot some lighter and they sounded like a banshee after they left the barrel.

Just go and shoot. Do you have any options? No.

Worst that can happen is you blow a few of them up.

FWIW I've launched couple hundred of Winchester white box 45 gr varmint shit through a 1-8 NM AR without issues.
